Description:
The Pease Public Library in Plymouth, NH is seeking a Youth Services Librarian with
excellent communication skills. Applicants must be able to demonstrate flexibility, good
judgment and good humor under varying circumstances. The ability to multi-task and
provide quality customer service is essential. Must be a community-oriented, hands-on team
player. Must be prepared to attend staff meetings, remain current on professional trends and
assist in planning team projects. Some Saturday and evening hours are required. Must enjoy
working with children, teens and their families.
Position Purpose:
Performs administrative and professional work in planning, organizing, and coordinating
activities of the Library Children’s Department. Performs all other related duties as required.
Essential Functions:

+ Plans, coordinates, and implements programming for children and young adults such as
weekly story time for those under 6, science programs, summer reading program, and
having outside presenters. These programs consist of music and movement, crafts,
educational activities, and resources for children and their adult caregivers.
+ Enhances the programs of local schools by providing complementary services.
+ Manages the materials collection for children and young adults which includes weeding,
using book review resources and purchasing materials. Catalogs and processes materials
for children and young adults, gifts, and purchases.
+ Provides customer services in the form of answering patron emails, providing reader’s
advisory, helping patrons find materials, computer and other technology instruction and
helping with OverDrive.
+ Maintains the circulation desks tasks (checking books in and out, pulling holds, curbside
hold service, registering patrons, answering phones, checking out museum passes and
shelving.)
+ Supervises the daily operation of the children’s room and the young adult room. Upholds
the library’s behavior and child safety policies.
+ Creates promotional materials for children’s and young adult programming. Maintains
the children and young adult sections of the library website and posts on social media
regarding children and young adult programming.
+ Compiles programming statistics and submits statistics to Director.
+ Performs outreach to schools and other local agencies for programming, especially
summer reading program.
+ Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Education, Training and Experience:
Master’s Degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school; three to five years of
related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library practices, procedures, and techniques.
Knowledge of youth literature and reading programs and activities. Working knowledge of
the policies, laws, and regulations pertaining to library services. Working knowledge of
library technology.
Ability: Ability to work with a wide variety of library patrons and library staff in a friendly,
efficient manner. Ability to listen and communicate effectively. Ability to use computerized
library systems and related equipment. Ability to think strategically. Ability to interpret and
follow policies and procedures and to operate standard office equipment. Ability to manage
a modest materials and programming budget.
Skill: Excellent customer service skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills; interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Good time management
and planning skills.
Supervision
Supervision Scope: This position performs various duties requiring a thorough knowledge of
departmental operations and the ability to complete assigned tasks according to established
procedures and protocol.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general direction of the Library
Director.
Supervision Given: Work-study students and/or volunteers, as available.
Job Environment:
+ Work is performed under typical office and library conditions; the noise level is
moderately noisy.
+ Operates computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, and other standard office
equipment.
+ Employee has frequent contact with the general public, patrons, libraries, and community
groups. Contacts are in person, via email or by telephone and involve an information
exchange dialogue.
+ Errors could result in delays or loss of library services, and/or poor public relations.

hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.
Salary: Salary range to begin this position shall be $18.10-18.64/hr. with extensive medical
and dental package.
