Position Overview
The Tower Hill Library is found on the lower level of the Stoddard Education and Visitors Center and is home to
more than 8,000 materials on gardening and related topics. The resources found in Tower Hill’s non-living library
collections are subdivided into three categories: 1) General Collections, including circulating and non-circulating
materials (e.g., books, DVDs, encyclopedias, directories, journals); 2) Special Collections including rare print
materials (e.g., herbals, compendiums) and institutional archives (e.g., annual reports, exhibition records,
correspondence); and 3) Teaching Collections including decorative arts (e.g., portraits, furnishings, rugs, porcelain,
silver flatware). Due to COVID-19, the Library closed to the public in March 2020 and it remains closed today. The
seasonal Collections Maintenance Librarian will complete collections maintenance projects that were deferred due
to this closure. Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Collections Maintenance Librarian will
complete the maintenance project that started prior to the pandemic and update library records in accordance with
the Collections Management Policy.
Responsibilities
• Complete the general collections weeding project.
• Deaccession and dispose of weeded items in accordance with the Collections Management Policy.
• Update MassCat library records.
• Update non-living collections PastPerfect records.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience and skills
• Ability to communicate well orally and in writing with colleagues and outside contacts such as members of
the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries.
• Demonstrated project management skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Effectively adapts to change and comfortably shift gears .
• Works effectively and respectfully with a diverse group of stakeholders.
• Makes decisions appropriate for level of responsibility.
• Follows safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment and consistently demonstrates safe work
behaviors.
Education and Experience
• A bachelors or masters degree from an ALA-accredited library program, or current enrollment in an ALAaccredited library program is required
• One year of professional experience in a library is required.
• Experience working in a special library is a plus.
• Competency in Microsoft Office and Teams, and database management software is required. Knowledge
of MassCat and PastPerfect is a plus.
Schedule
The Librarian’s position is seasonal, hourly, and non-exempt from overtime. The standard work schedule for this
position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. We anticipate an April start and for the candidate to remain
on staff until the projects outlined above have been completed. There may be an opportunity to take on additional
projects in the future.
Work Environment
This job operates primarily in The Tower Hill library. The role routinely uses standard technology such computers,
communications equipment, and multi-function devices such as photocopiers.
Essential Functions
• Must be able to occasionally move items up to 25 pounds
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
• Must be able to access shelved books at various heights and to move them
• Must be able to pack and ship books as required
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable with local travel
