This position will play a large role in King’s commitment to becoming a premier research institution. The Library/Learning Commons Specialist provides teachers and students with a media center environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will challenge intellectual growth, and aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources. The Library/Learning Commons Specialist will collaborate with Middle and Upper School leadership to provide day to day supervision of the Learning Commons and divisional alignment. The position serves under the direction of the Director of Technology Integration and Innovation, who will provide school-wide coordination, department management, and yearly thematic program alignment in support of this position’s effectiveness.
Responsibilities:
- Operates and supervises the library/learning commons in the Upper School and Middle School.
- Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials, and instructs teachers and students on the use of the system.
- Assists faculty in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
- Works cooperatively with teachers in planning assignments and interdisciplinary units and presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic in cooperation with the classroom teacher.
- Assists students in developing habits of media literacy, independent research, and skills in the critical use of research materials in relation to planned assignments.
- Works cooperatively with the Directors of Teaching and Learning in providing reading guidance to all students, including those who have learning accommodations or distinct intellectual interests.
- Facilitates and supports cross-functional teaming within the Technology, Library, and Innovation department and supports Makerspace initiatives.
- Supervises media center volunteers in the performance of their duties.
- Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new media center materials.
- Arranges frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits most likely to interest the media center’s patrons.
- Removes obsolete materials from circulation and informs teachers of new materials.
- Maintains professional competence through professional growth and development opportunities that are both self-selected and offered schoolwide.
- Attends regular meetings with the Director of Technology Integration and Innovation.
- Performs other tasks and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Technology Integration and Innovation or the Division Head.
Skills and Requirements:
- Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of teaching and learning and of current practices in library media services.
- Must possess the ability to: develop instructional goals for students; manage print, non-print, and electronic collection of curriculum support materials and equipment; prepare and monitor department budget; provide work direction to others; collaborate with other instructional personnel; communicate instructional goals to others effectively, orally and in writing.
- Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and methodologies of research, teaching and supporting research skills in grades 6 to 12, as well as coaching and mentoring faculty in the adoption of research skills and tools into their instruction.
- Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, maintaining effective interpersonal relationships and communications, and planning.
- Classroom management experience.
- Proven ability to facilitate differentiated, student-centered best practices.
- Proven ability to develop teaching units in conjunction with colleagues.
- Possess a sound understanding of the intellectual and social-emotional developmental stages of adolescents.
- Proven ability to encourage student discovery and autonomy of thought and must have the capacity to nurture skill development.
- Demonstrated initiative and savviness in cross-cultural competence, ability to value, work within, interact with, and incorporate diverse and multiple perspectives. Ability to negotiate and facilitate a shared understanding and common goals across cultural differences in a professional setting.
