Posted March 5, 2021
Description:
The Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor, Maine is seeking a self-directed leader with thorough knowledge of library management and library science to serve as our new Library Director. The major areas of responsibility are supervision and management of the library’s programs, services, collections, budget, staff, and facilities, and the Library Director needs to have a strong working relationship with the Board of Directors, volunteers, donors and foundations, and the local community of Mount Desert Island.
The Jesup is a private nonprofit corporation that has provided public library services to the Town of Bar Harbor and the surrounding area since 1911. It currently has a dedicated staff of nine employees and is in the final phase of a major capital campaign to restore our historic building and add a new wing. The library is governed by a Board of Directors and funded by annual fundraising, an endowment, and the Town of Bar Harbor.
The library works to connect people of all ages through programs, technology, and services to ideas, information, and each other. In 2019, the Jesup offered 324 programs that were attended by almost 6800 people and circulated 43988 items. Our new Library Director must share this commitment to community involvement and be eager to work collaboratively with other organizations.
The Jesup serves as a modern community and cultural center for both Bar Harbor’s year-round community and the large influx of seasonal visitors who visit Acadia National Park each summer. With a year-round population of 5470, Bar Harbor’s largest employers include the Jackson Laboratory, MDI Biological Laboratory, and College of the Atlantic.
An M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. with at least five years of library experience with some at the administrative level including staff supervision and budget preparation is required. The full job description for the Library Director can be found here.
The pay range for this position is $65,000 – $75,000 plus benefits depending upon qualifications and experience.
The Jesup Memorial Library is committed to hiring and maintaining a diverse workforce of highly qualified staff to broaden perspectives, promote equity and inclusion, and connect to the breadth of our community. Applicants with racially, ethnically, or culturally diverse identities or backgrounds are urged to apply.
