Curator for the Maine Women Writers Collection, University of New England, Portland, ME

Administer daily operations and collections management for the Maine Women Writers Collection (MWWC). Work in conjunction with the Dorothy M. Healy Professor of Literature and Health to acquire and promote the use of MWWC materials. Maintain regular communication and collaboration with the Dorothy M. Healy Professor on all aspects of MWWC work.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Acquire manuscript collections, digital materials, rare books and contemporary publications.
  • Maintain professional best practices for collections processing, storage, handling, use and conservation.
  • Perform reference services for researchers on and off-site.
  • Plan and coordinate events, conferences and outreach activities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with authors, community members, donors and book dealers.
  • Create and maintain legal documents (deeds of gift, loan forms) and relationships with executors of literary estates and other institutions; stay up to date on copyright and other legal matters related to literary estates.
  • Oversee MWWC budget and expenditures.
  • Lead goal-setting and long-range strategic planning for the collection.
  • Perform administrative duties related to the daily functions of MWWC: facilities management, policies and procedures, security.
  • Supervise interns and volunteers.
  • Assist with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Prioritize and assist with arrangement, description, conservation and digitization activities.
  • Collaborate with Education and Outreach Archivist to integrate MWWC materials into the curriculum. 
  • Attend literary and Maine history events throughout the year. 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or related degree, plus at least five years of experience in archives and special collections or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  •  Background in English and women’s and gender studies is desirable.

Compensation:

This is a full-time, salaried position. Generous vacation and sick leave. Medical, dental and vision benefits are included. Salary beginning in low 50,000 range.
