Library of Congress Announces 2021 Librarians-in-Residence Program

The Library of Congress has announced the 2021 Librarians-in-Residence program to offer early career librarians the opportunity to develop their expertise and contribute to building, stewarding and sharing the institution’s vast collections. Applications for the program will be accepted from Dec. 18, 2020 to Jan. 22, 2021.
The Library will select up to seven applicants for a six-month residency to begin in June 2021. The program is open to students who will complete their master’s degrees in an American Library Association-accredited library and information science program no later than June 2021 or who completed such a degree no earlier than December 2019.
“I am thrilled to once again offer this opportunity for early-career librarians to apply their technological skills and talent to the ever-evolving challenges of operating a 21st century library,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “We’ve developed the Librarians-in-Residence program to give them the fullest experience working with the collections at the world’s largest library. The Library benefits from the infusion of new energy, skills and perspectives, and the residents benefit from working with Library staff and mentors who are the top in their fields.”
The program gives early-career librarians the opportunity to receive on-the-job training and undertake assignments that contribute to the ongoing mission and work of the Library of Congress in at least one of the following areas of specialization:
- Archives and special collections (new for 2021)
- Cataloging and metadata
- Collection preservation
- Digital services
- Reference and instruction
Additionally, Librarians-in-Residence will work with mentors and have formal opportunities to share their knowledge with Library staff. The program will offer compensation at the GS-9 pay level. The Librarians-in-Residence program complements other education and training programs from the Library, such as the Junior Fellows program, a summer internship program for college students, and Summer Teacher Institutes, which offers workshops for K-12 teachers to learn strategies for utilizing primary source materials in the classroom.
