Statement of Duties:
Under the general direction of the Director, the Deputy Director Libraries acts as a human resources, operations, and organizational development officer for the library system. Directing and working with library staff to coordinate consistent and effective library services system-wide that are in-line with the library’s strategic goals, vision, and mission. As the most senior library staff person next to the Director of Libraries, this position assumes responsibility for all library functions including management, direction, budget, and operations in the absence of the Director.
Additionally, this individual is responsible for overall collection development management, including creation and implementation of collection development plan, allocation of funds, and evaluation of collections based on library mission, public need, usage statistics, and related information.
Essential Functions:
- Manages hiring, recruiting, new employee orientation, and staff development in coordination with the Library Director
- Writes performance evaluations, recommends remedial assistance, disciplinary action, and merit or position upgrades
- Prepares personnel reports as required
- Interprets library and city policies for staff
- Coordinates and attends meetings with personnel staff
- Oversees and manages day-to-day building operations for Central Library, including submitting and following up on work requests; and supervising the work of the custodian
- Initiates, manages, implements, and evaluates special projects and programs
- Develops policies and procedures as required
- Analyzes and improves workflows and facilitates organizational development and staffing plans
- Attends library and community events
- Fills in at service desks as needed
- Represents the Director and/or Library at meetings and conferences
- Attends meetings of the Friends of the Library and Trustees of the Library
- Special projects and any other duties as assigned by the Director
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university.
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school of library and information science.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible professional library work , public library experience preferred.
- In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part of the educational requirement.
- Bi-lingual or multilingual ability in Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Haitian-Creole is desirable.

Other Information:
This is a full-time position. Salary is $86,700.00 annual plus benefits.
