Opened on October 1st, the new Tufts Library is the flagship library of the Weymouth Public Libraries. The new 50,000-square-foot library includes five meeting rooms, ten study rooms, a digital media lab, local history center, teen room, quiet room, library programming rooms, and an outdoor amphitheater. Partially funded by a Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program grant, the $33 million library embraces innovation while honoring Weymouth’s storied past.

The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a professional and self-starting librarian interested in being a key member of a progressive, dynamic library system. We seek an outgoing, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian to provide technology instruction and reference services. Our culture of “Yes!” has resulted in a large growth in programs and services for grateful and increasingly engaged library patrons and local decision makers. We are fortunate to be in a state-of-the-art new building, which has a Digital Media Lab, 46 public computers as well as meeting and study rooms, equipped with collaboration tools and device mirroring capabilities. This is an exciting opportunity to help our patrons take advantage of all the technologies our space has to offer.

This position is part-time Tuesdays through Fridays 10:00AM to 2:00 PM. Compensation is $23.9794 per hour. Hours are Tuesdays-Fridays 10:00AM to 2:00 PM (16 hours per week). Reference/Technology Instruction Librarian works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services and in collaboration with the Technology Services Librarian.

Job Environment:

Work is performed under typical office and library conditions. The work environment is moderately quiet. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate. Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Daily contact with library patrons by phone, in person, and in writing.

Essential Functions:

Develops and teaches skill-based technology classes to groups of patrons, as well as provide one-on-one technology support. Provides staff and public with support for computers, software, and associated technology. Assists with user technology-related questions and problem resolution as needed; teaches instructional classes in the use of computers, mobile devices, digital resources, image and video editing, and other technology as needed. Works with staff to develop technology competencies and creates and delivers staff training as needed. Responsible for providing reference services to the general public as assigned.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience
Substantial completion of a Master’s degree in library and information sciences from an ALA-accredited school. Experience with library instruction, integrated library systems, hardware, software, emerging technologies, website design, and mobile services preferred.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, and current trends and resources in technology services and reference. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; graphic design software; basic technology support and troubleshooting; software applications support. Extensive knowledge of and comfort with emerging library/information technology skills and trends.

Ability and Skill: Familiarity, comfort, and skill with downloadable media, blogging tools, social media, and website maintenance. A strong public service commitment. Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to excel as a teacher in a group setting or one on one. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Must have superior abilities in the area of reference and reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory. Ability to troubleshoot software and hardware. Must be comfortable with and have a history of public speaking and presentation experience.

Physical Requirements:

Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 10 pounds.
