Youth Services Librarian, Cotuit Library, Barnstable, MA

The Cotuit Library, an independent, 501(C)(3) non-profit library, seeks a creative, flexible and tech savvy individual to serve as Youth Services Librarian. The ideal candidate will be prepared to create a robust array of virtual opportunities for patrons during this period of limited in-person service and determine how to incorporate and adapt such program.

Statement of Duties:

  • Plans, organizes and implements in-Library and outreach programs for children ages birth to 17, including story hours, reading clubs, maker programs and intergenerational events.
  • Develops these programs in collaboration with local schools and preschools, various community groups and other Library and local network staff.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and develops projects for Children’s Room volunteers.
  • Maintains current knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, film and music, popular digital technologies, programming developments and related library services and resources.
  • Seeks input from children/teens, parents and others who work with youth to ensure the Library’s offerings meet the needs of our community.
  • Pursues grant funding opportunities in collaboration with the Library’s Marketing Coordinator to support programs.
  • Uses social media, the Library’s website and print materials in collaboration with the Marketing Coordinator to publicize programs and expand the Library’s audience.
  • Provides instruction on information literacy and the use of Library resources and new technologies.
  • Selects materials for acquisition and weeding.
  • Manages a budget for children’s and young adult materials and programs.
  • Youth Services Librarian assists patrons of all ages with circulation services and in using Library resources as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of children’s literature, information technology and principles/practices of library work.
  • A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science is highly preferred, but a combination of relevant education and library experience serving children and young adults may be considered. 

Other Information:

This is a part-time, 20 hours per week position. Compensation is $19 per hour. Benefits package with subsidized health insurance through the Town of Barnstable.
