Description:
The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools library program is designed to nurture children’s love of literature and their enthusiasm for investigating the existing body of knowledge on any given subject of interest. The Lower School Librarian reports to the Lower School Principal and has day-to-day responsibilities for the operation of Knes Family Library in partnership with one other professional librarian. The librarian guides students in the Lower School as they become skilled and effective library users, developing lifelong habits of reading, inquiry, curiosity, and creativity. Students learn to locate and navigate print and online resources, beginning to learn research strategies and the recording of citation information. Students in the Lower School also develop an appreciation of writing styles and oral storytelling, identify genres, and develop an understanding of their own reading preferences through library classes, librarian sponsored programs, and browsing times in the library during which the librarian is available to provide readers’ advisory. The Lower School Librarian empowers students to be curious, critical thinker and enthusiastic readers. The librarian supports social and emotional learning and the Lower School’s commitment to being Kind, Thoughtful, and Responsible. Additionally, the librarian takes a leadership role in the school by sharing their professional expertise with colleagues. The librarian takes a lead in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the School by opening minds through access to information and advocacy for intellectual freedom. The librarian will interact daily with students, other faculty members, and other librarians within our schools.
