UT Libraries seeks a Metadata Analyst (Assistant Librarian) to standardize controlled access vocabulary for the “Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO) Consortium to the 21st Century Project.”
About Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO)
Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO) is the online statewide consortium for archival finding aids. TARO (www.legacy.lib.utexas.edu/taro) has not been updated since its debut in 1999, and although it still functions and is heavily used, it is due for significant updates. The University of Texas Libraries seek a collaborative, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Metadata Analyst to support improvement of TARO’s new interface by using open source tools to map, transform, and enhance controlled access vocabulary terms. The ideal candidate will have experience with cultural heritage metadata, working knowledge of archival practice and descriptive tools, and excellent communication skills to interface with the TARO Steering Committee and TARO stakeholders.
Position Term
This 1-year term-limited position will report to the Head of Preservation and Digital Stewardship. It is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Remote applicants are welcome to apply.
This position is able to be fully remote, or in Austin whenever the campus is re-opened.
Responsibilities
- Validate existing metadata terms (e.g., names, geographic locations, genres, and subjects) against authority files
- Collaborate with TARO Steering Committee, UT Libraries, and TARO Standards Subcommittee to create master lists of approved controlled access vocabulary
- Write training documentation that TARO members can use to edit their own subject headings
- Plan and monitor project tasks, communicate project status to stakeholders through monthly progress updates to UT Libraries and the TARO Steering Committee, and ensure timely completion of milestones

Research indicates that applicants with marginalized identities are hesitant to apply for positions if they do not meet all the required and preferred qualifications. We want to emphasize that although experience in certain areas is desirable, entry-level candidates who meet the required qualifications, demonstrate excellent promise, and a passion for working with metadata are encouraged to apply and will be given serious consideration, especially those who are underrepresented in this field. Opportunities for training, mentorship, and support from people with a variety of skill sets exist locally, regionally, and nationally.
