Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library is seeking to fill the position of Library Local History & Genealogy Supervisor.
We are looking for an experienced captain for our local history and genealogy team. A visionary, flexible professional will lead our friendly, knowledgeable, supportive staff to build the next level of our Local History, Genealogy, Herman Melville, and Berkshire Authors collections and services. Our collections of historical documents, photos, manuscripts, artifacts and publications are strong and our colleagues are wise and motivated. We are looking for someone who is ready to go down some new and adventurous roads that will honor this past and imagine a future that engages new and wider audiences.

This is a full-time position working thirty-five hours per week.

Responsibilities

Supervises both full and part time staff. Provides professional attention and assistance to staff and/or public. Provides training and supervision of subordinate staff.

Reviews literature, surveys personnel, and confers with Library Director to determine departmental needs, assess current program, propose, and implement changes for improved operations.

Plans, schedules, promotes, and executes, as appropriate, programs, events and/or exhibits.

Uses the department’s audio-visual, office and/or computer equipment and resources, routinely offers training to staff and/or public in its use, and conducts basic diagnostic and maintenance procedures.

Monitors departmental expenditures for personnel and library materials; and prepares monthly and yearly statistical reports.

Provides training and supervision of subordinate staff.

Works with lay advisory groups (i.e. Berkshire Family History Association, Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum, et al.)

Intermittent standing, walking, bending, and reaching, reading printed material, communicating orally and via telephone.

Light physical effort is required in performing the duties of this position under typical library conditions. Lifting light loads up to twenty pounds from the floor to positions overhead..

Performs other duties as assigned including preservation, clerical and shelving tasks as needed.
Qualifications

Masters Degree in Library Science.

Knowledge of reference, archive, and genealogy services.

Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills; dynamic and self motivated.

Progressively responsible library experience, including management and supervisory experience.

Comfortable learning about and using new and changing library technology.

Demonstrated patience and skill in dealing with general public.
Compensation: $23.05 to $30.21 per hour in ten steps ($41,951 to $54,982 Annually)
