Job Description
Under the direction of the Associate Law Librarian, the Research and Access Services Librarian, Law Library provides reference and research support to law school students, faculty, and staff. The incumbent is responsible for managing circulation, reserves, and other access services, and providing legal research instruction to law library patrons.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reference and Research
- Provide general information and legal reference services through regular shifts at the Reference Desk.
- Provide research services to law faculty, students, alumni, and staff.
- Design, develop, and maintain web-based guides and related digital support resources to support access to library resources.
- Contribute to the law library’s collection development efforts, including selection and assessment of resources.
- Stay current on new developments in technology related to delivery of legal reference and research services.
Access Services
- Oversee the library’s access services operations including the library systems supporting circulation and reserves.
- Provide backup for resource sharing services.
- Supervise circulation desk services and provide desk coverage, as needed.
- Proactively seek ways to improve delivery methods and workflows to meet changing user needs and emerging technologies.
- Design and administer appropriate assessment and usability instruments related to circulation and reserve services.
- Collect and analyze data from the integrated library system and other sources pertaining to circulation and access services.
- Communicate assessment findings to assist the library administration in planning, decision-making, collection management, and process improvement.
- Compile required information for completion of assessment surveys both internally within the School of Law and the University, as well as from external agencies.
- Maintain the Student Library Assistant Procedures Manual and related updates to the Library Staff Guide, when necessary.
- Manage inventory processes and workflow.
- Work with the Associate Law Librarian in the development and implementation of circulation, reserves, and access policies and procedures.
Instruction
- Develop presentations that further the law library’s reference, research, teaching, and marketing efforts.
- Present informational and instructional sessions, lectures, workshops, and tours of the library.
- Deliver basic and advanced legal research instruction to students, student groups, faculty research assistants, and alumni.
- Present classroom instruction, as required by professors, and participate in advanced legal research courses.
Student Intern Work Coordination
- Interview and hire Student Library Assistants.
- Enhance, organize, and provide a comprehensive training for Student Library Assistants that produces knowledgeable, service oriented student employees.
- Schedule Student Library Assistant coverage of the circulation desk.
- Assign duties to Student Library Assistant’s and oversee their job performance.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school.
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- One year of library experience, preferably in a law library.
- Strong service orientation.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact with faculty, students, visitors and staff.
- Ability to function as a tam member and work independently with little or no supervision.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and projects.
- Attention to detail needed to complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
- Dedication to professional development.
- Intermediate computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of supervisory experience.
At the University’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Salaries for new hires at Roger Williams University usually fall between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range.
