Responsibilities
- Provides circulation support related to troubleshooting issues that arise with materials such as billing for damaged items, performing searches for missing items, fixing damaged items, and dealing with incomplete and mismatched items.
- Provides customer service by checking materials in and out, maintaining customer accounts including updating, renewing, collecting fines and fees and registering new cards; enforces policies and procedures to customers and staff.
- Assists customers, staff, and other branches with locating library materials in person, over the phone, via computer, and interlibrary loans; instructs customers in the use of Internet searching, software application, sand social media tools.
- Assists with planning and coordination of programs and outreach; assists with reader’s advisory, and reference questions.
- Assists with ordering of materials, office supplies, periodicals; assists with maintenance of inventory of the branch/department; periodically weeds damaged and low circulation materials including boxing up materials and sending them to proper location.
- Displays materials in a variety of different formats; constructs and disassembles displays as required.
- May assist with cash handling; balances cash register; sends deposits to Finance.
- Performs record keeping, report preparation, and filling.
- Monitors customers in the Library and reminds them of Library policies as required to ensure that the resources of the Library are fully accessible to all customers.
- Assists customers with the use of library computers, mobile devices, wireless connections, wireless printing, specialized equipment, software, and applications.
- Promotes and supports the overall mission of the Library by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree; AND two (2) years of library operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid driver’s license is required.
- Ability to learn and apply principles and practices of library sciences and services and collections.
- Ability to learn and apply library policies and procedures.
- Principles and techniques of preparing effective written informational or educational materials.
- Research techniques and practices.
- Records management principles and practices.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Techniques for working with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System is required and those selected for interview may be asked to complete a 10 minute Dewey Decimal Skills Test during the interview process. A study guide is available on our job site.
- Must have completed nine credit hours of specific library science courses or commit to completing them within three years of start date in this position. Completion of this coursework will allow the person obtaining this position to achieve the required Librarian Certification Level 5 within three years of start date in this position. After requirements are met, must earn 50 LEU (Library Education Units) within five years.
Preferred Skills & Abilities
- Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is preferred but not required.
Work Schedule
Ability and willingness to work a mix of day, evening and weekend hours.

Physical Demands
