Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the Librarian is to provide rapid delivery of information in support of patient care to all library users.  Information needs are defined by the reference interview or by listening to the discussions during rounds, H3W department and subcommittee meetings. The Librarian will identify relevant and pertinent evidence-based journal articles, locate material, verify citations and deliver needed information in a time appropriate manner. 

Additionally, the Librarian has responsibility for the provision of teaching effective information retrieval to St. Vincent’s library customers to promote the integration and utilization of information into the daily work flow. Provide training for physicians, residents, fellows, nurses and other St. Vincent’s staff with formal classes or conducting database demonstration on searching the health-care literature and other knowledge management tools.

This position reports to the Director of Library Services, Health Science Libraries based at Hartford Hospital.

Overview of Functions

• Adapt to the schedule of the department to participate in patient care rounds, grand rounds, teaching rounds, H3W departmental meetings, H3W subcommittees or conferences and GMEC as needed. 
• Perform mediated searching using databases provided by Ovid Technologies, PubMed, EBSCO, Clinical Key, UpToDate, Psychiatry Online, web-based search engines and others.
• Recommend appropriate electronic resources in assigned subject areas as a member of the collection development team. This encompasses continual review and trialing usability of electronic books, journals, and emerging electronic resources
• Collaborate with HHC CME in the development of program content.
• Assist with the conduction of needs assessments and gap analyses.
• Maintain accurate files and records.
• Assist cataloger with special cataloging projects on an as-needed basis.
• Assists the Library Director in developing, updating, and enforcing all policies and procedures
• Remain abreast of information management trends by participating in professional meetings, serving on committees, and attending workshops.
• Adhere to the principles of service excellence for all library customers and colleagues.
• Attentive to safety issues in all matters.

Skills

• Exhibit excellent literature database searching skills across multiple biomedical databases on various platforms such as those provided by Ovid Technologies, EBSCO Host, Elsevier, American Psychological Association and PubMed. 
• Demonstrate strong communication and presentation skills to support education and introduction of library resources.
• Demonstrate HHC values and H3W leadership behaviors.
• Good reference interviewing skills.
• Good listening skills.
• Ability to perceive information needs and deliver value enhanced evidence.
• Apply principles of adult education in class design.
• Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to set up demonstrations of relevant resources and educational platform.

Working Conditions

Physical space includes library stacks, library office and computer room. The stack area contains numerous books and journals. Also many hours of work is spent at a computer. There is some climbing on foot stools and handling of heavy books and journals. There is no natural light in the library.

Qualifications

• ALA accredited MLS; a strong science or allied health background preferred. 
• Minimum 2 – 3 years of medical or allied health library experience.
• Advanced biomedical database searching skills
• Computer literacy at the advanced beginner level including mobile technology
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
• Ability to be self-directed and work independently
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Teaching experience, especially with teaching literature searching skills, preferred.
• Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms preferred.
• Comfortable presenting to a large group (50 people or more)
