Digital Archivist, Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta, GA

The Atlanta University Center – Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service.  To continue our excellence in program and services, the library seeks a knowledgeable, engaging, dynamic, customer focused digital archivist.  Reporting to the Assistant Head of the Archives Research Center (ARC), and working as a member of the ARC team, this position provides administration of the department’s digital preservation and born-digital processing of archival collections.  Additionally, the Digital Archivist will model the Library’s customer service philosophy through recommendation and implementation of policies and procedures for reference efficiency and effectiveness, promotion of archival and special collections via programming, tours for visiting groups, reference management, and compilation of statistical and financial reports. This position requires evening work Monday through Thursday, and weekend work on a rotational basis.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops procedures for managing born-digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organization, description, and access to:
    • Digital materials on current and legacy physical media
    • Web-based material, particularly with reference the RWWL Library materials and those related to donors
  • Creates and updates archives research guides and designs and manages archival digital collections
  • Integrates proper digital forensic tools in order to help ensure authentic and appropriately preserved archival materials
  • Coordinates and promotes digital exhibits
  • Assists with the processing, preserving, and acquisition of archival, historical, and special collections materials
  • Assists the Assistant Head with the implementation of Instruction Services and course development 
  • Facilitates access and conducts research within archival, manuscript and book collections to assist with in-person and remote inquiries regarding archival, manuscript and book collections
    • Participates on department and library-wide committees and/or taskforces
  • Contributes to the success of the Archives Research Center by performing all other duties as assigned

Educational/Training Requirements:

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or Master’s degree in History or Archival Science; academic and practical training in archival management.

Experience:

  • Experience with content management systems including Omeka, and ArchivesSpace is highly desirable
  • Experience with born-digital records and born-digital preservation workflows
  • Experience providing research, reference and instructional services
  • Experience with curation of special collections exhibits desired
  • Demonstrated experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Suite
  • Demonstrated experience working with integrated library systems such as OCLC

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Foundational knowledge of digital archives, best practices and real-world applications, trends and emerging technologies, and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, standards, and proper handling of physical archival collections materials
  • Strong knowledge of African American history and culture; educational background in related field preferred and highly desirable
  • Knowledge of archival content, structure, and preservation metadata standards including MARC, EAD, DACS, MODS, PREMIS, etc.
