The University of Virginia Library seeks a new Acquisitions Specialist in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library.
The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library connects users with the manuscripts, rare books, and archival collections necessary to support research, teaching, and instruction in numerous subject areas. The Acquisitions Specialist in this position supports that mission by providing expertise and oversight of the library’s acquisition of new materials for the collection. The position will have primary responsibility for monographic ordering, receiving, paying, and preliminary cataloging, in addition to supervising student employees assisting in these tasks. This position will also provide acquisitions expertise to other units and special project teams as necessary. They will need to maintain numerous relationships and provide exceptional customer service, working closely with external vendors and staff from across the library system and at other institutions. This position will collaborate with other Library staff to maintain adherence to all state and local procurement policies and regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Previous work experience in a Library setting
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with a wide range of groups and individuals, both internal and external to the Library
- A demonstrated ability to work independently and flexibly, prioritize work and resolve complex problems
Preferred Qualifications
- Related experience in a library, specifically in library acquisitions, cataloging, or special collections
- Knowledge of one or more Western European languages
- Knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, including MARC, RDA, AACR2, and DACS
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, push loaded book truck, and climb ladders
** This is a benefitted 20 hour part time position **
Anticipated hiring range: $22,000 – $26,000
The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.
