Library Director, Rappahannock County Public Library, Washington, VA

The Library Board of Trustees solicits applications from qualified applicants for the position of Library Director for the Rappahannock County Public Library (RCPL) located in Washington, Virginia (about 75 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.). RCPL recently received a generous bequest, and the Library Board of Trustees (Trustees) are working to identify the community’s goals for expansion and renovation of our wonderful rural library. We are an intimate, vibrant community library and we proudly care for our client’s needs, which range from story time for youngsters, and personalized, warm care for our senior patrons.

Rappahannock County is a rural county of approximately 7200 people bordering Shenandoah National Park, Culpeper and Fauquier counties. We have a wealth of outdoor activities, and art and cultural events that are exceptional for a county of our size. Our incomparable scenic views, pristine environment and community make this county a great place to live and work.

The Library Director runs all aspects of the Library: manages the collection and Library budget; collects and prepares data for State, local and Trustee requirements; communicates with and serves Library patrons; and supervises and directs the work of a Senior Librarian and Library Assistant. The Library Director reports to the Trustees.

 

Candidates should have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Masters’ Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS);

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in management of a library, including management of staff; and

  • Experienced with strategic planning and expanding outreach to the community.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing for library projects; and

  • Experience with expansion and renovation of an existing library.

 

The Trustees are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and innovative leader who can transform our library into one of the premier libraries in Central Virginia, and to ensure high-quality, state-of-the-art service for our rural community for the years to come in an increasingly technology-driven world.

 

Salary

Full-time starting salary will be from $75,000 negotiable, depending upon experience and qualifications. Benefits include Virginia Retirement System and health insurance with family supplement.
