Technical Services Librarian, The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, CT

The Katharine Brush Library at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut is searching for a collaborative, dynamic, progressive, and tech-savvy librarian. One of three professional librarians, the librarian will assume the primary responsibility of managing technical services and the library’s integrated library system. The Technical Services Librarian will also have major involvement in the many public service aspects of the library, including instruction, reference, collection development, and community outreach initiatives. This position includes some evening and weekend hours.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the library’s technical services department

  • Train and supervise technical services staff in cataloging, classification, processing, policies, and library technologies

  • Revise and create procedures for the technical services department

  • Manage Koha, the library’s integrated library system, to enhance, revise, and update catalog records to increase accessibility to the collection. This includes ensuring that the collection of print and electronic resources are fully accessible via the OPAC and discovery service layer

  • Design and coordinate cataloging, collection maintenance, and weeding projects

  • Perform original cataloging as needed

  • Catalog print materials from the archives and work with the archivist to determine cataloging prioritization

  • Provide high-quality general and subject specialized reference assistance and research consultations to the Loomis community

  • Develop, support, and revise the library’s online resources, including LibGuides

  • Assist in collection management and development

  • Assist in coordinating the summer reading program

  • Work with librarians to teach and develop the instruction and information literacy program, including lesson planning, information literacy curriculum development, and student assessments

  • Special and other projects or tasks assigned as necessary as they pertain to the goals and objectives of the library

 

Other Responsibilities

In addition to library responsibilities, faculty at The Loomis Chaffee School are responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising, committee work, and other duties.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Required

    • MLS, MLIS, or equivalent master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution

    • Two to three years of experience as a professional librarian in a public, academic, or independent school library with a focus on technical services or cataloging

    • Knowledge of library cataloging and familiarity with Library of Congress Classification System, MARC and AACR2 cataloging

    • Experience with managing integrated library systems and discovery service systems, including bulk importing and exporting of catalog records

    • An understanding of current trends, best practices, and standards in cataloging and technical services

    • Experience with tools and services that support cataloging functions, such as MarcEdit

    • Library reference or research consultation experience

    • Proficiency working with digital library resources and databases

    • Positive attitude, strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work independently as well as in a team

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

    • Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative environment and interact effectively with faculty, colleagues, and academically motivated high school students

  • Preferred

    • Writing and running database queries in SQL (Structured Query Language)

    • Experience teaching in a library instruction program

    • Experience with usability techniques for library resources and spaces, including user-centered design tools and technologies
