Position Summary
The Summer Intern, Basketball Analytics is a paid hourly position that will support the Basketball Analytics team by taking on a variety of responsibilities, including modeling basketball situations, researching team strategy, and streamlining existing or new processes. The Intern will engage in multiple individually-owned projects to be delivered to stakeholders at the conclusion of their term.

The Basketball Analytics team supports the Los Angeles Lakers’ Basketball Operations department by creating tools, curating research, and performing predictive modeling. Duties & Responsibilities

Enthusiastically perform any task asked of them, which may include code review, data cleaning, presentation formatting, or data sourcing

Assist Basketball Analytics team in providing data-oriented solutions to the appropriate stakeholders

Manipulate and leverage large data sets to enable statistical analyses of the data. Source, process, and visualize new datasets that may aid in potential evaluation or prediction of teams or players

Create efficient, interpretable, automated tools to aid in communicating data results and visualizations
Education
-
Current university undergraduate or graduate student with proficiency in Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (note: no specific major requirement)
Technical Qualifications

Proficiency with a multipurpose language (e.g. Python, R)

Proficiency with basic statistical techniques (e.g. clustering, regression modeling, decision trees) and knowledge of associated performance characteristics

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Experience with technologies and tools to clearly and aesthetically deliver insights (e.g. Tableau, RMarkdown)

Experience with building mobile or web apps a plus

Familiarity with relational database architecture and technologies (e.g. SQL Server) a plus

Adaptable, eager to learn technical, communication, and presentation skills

Ability to communicate complex results, statistical or otherwise, to non-technical stakeholders
