Position Purpose
This position plans, implements, and maintains the Library’s automated systems and services, staff and public access computers and devices. This position serves as systems administrator for the library’s local area network, including maintenance, security, backup, upgrade, and development. This position is the administrator for the Library’s web site.
Essential Job Functions

Administers and supports Library’s integrated circulation and cataloging systems

Serves as implementation coordinator/liaison between the Holyoke Public Library and the library’s automated systems vendors

Manages desktop systems at all locations including purchase, installation, upgrade, repair, security, and routine maintenance for staff and public functions

Acts as a liaison with hardware and software and telecommunications vendors

Compiles and interprets statistics and prepares reports as needed

Maintains inventory, passwords and license records for all hardware and software

Provides staff and public with technical training in the use of internet applications, software and hardware

Attends professional meetings and workshops

Maintains up to date computer services by installing, maintaining and upgrading the operating system and application software, security, emai and virus protection systems, and other software maintenance activities.

Helps correct operating deficiencies or other difficulties by conducting research and locating software upgrades and patches.

Assists all computer users by installing, maintaining and repairing hardware and software.

Assures equipment performance by performing fault isolation tests, and if needed transporting the defective equipment to the computer maintenance area or vendor as necessary.

Installs, maintains and repairs hardware by assembling and testing cable connectors for personal computers, performing personal computer hardware upgrades and installations and performing minor repairs and adjustments to personal computers and printers.

Conducts workshops and computer trainings for staff and public in general.

Works closely with and maintains effective communication with Library Director to ensure smooth operation of the Library’s automated systems and services

Develops and recommends policy and procedures for the use of computers, computer systems, and other devices.

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as the situation dictates.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience; Two years experience in Computer Technology and Support; Microsoft Windows and Office experience; prefer A+ and Net+ certification; understanding of Library operations and service mission, including experience with automated circulation systems
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, knowledge of how computers work and working knowledge of printers and printer networks;
Ability: Ability to train others and provide user support, analyze and problem solve, ability to work on multiple projects/tasks at one time. Self starter who can work with minimal supervision;
Skill: Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, operates computers systems efficiently, diagnoses operational problems, and responds to user technical assistance requests. web markup skills, including HTML and CSS
Physical and Mental Requirements
Moderate physical effort required to perform work; frequent bending, crouching and reaching required for such tasks as moving and installing computer hardware and related office equipment. Tasks involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation; operates a keyboard at an efficient speed. Position requires the ability to access all library areas and offices on a regular basis, including traversing flights of stairs in various floors. Vision capabilities include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Occasionally lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as computer hardware, books, equipment, and supplies.
Supervision
Supervision Scope: Maintains the operation and maintenance of library software and hardware.
Supervision Received: Works under the general and specific direction of the Library Director and/or Assistant Library Director.
Supervision Given: None.
Job Environment

Work is performed under typical office and library conditions; the noise level is fairly quite; occasionally may be required to work outside of normal business hours. Library hours may require attendance at evening meetings.

Operates computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, calculator, and other standard office equipment.

Employee has frequent contact with the general public, other library computer coordinators/IT, schools, city departments, vendors, and consultants. Contacts are in person, by telephone, and by email and involve an information exchange dialogue.

Has access to all department-related confidential information, including patron records.

Errors could result in adverse public relations, injuries to other employees, damage to the library building and equipment, reduction in the level of library service and have legal and/or financial repercussions for the library.

Errors in judgment, operating and maintaining the computer systems can result in the disruption and/or poor quality of library services.
