Library Assistant – Youth Services, Dedham Public Library, Dedham, MA

The Dedham Public Library is looking for a qualified Library Assistant for its Youth Services Department. Under the general supervision of the Youth Services Librarian and Youth & Teen Librarian, this position performs a variety of routine clerical, computer and manual work in circulating library materials and provides services and programming to library patrons, related work as required. Must be available to work some nights and Saturdays, as scheduled for provision of service requires.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives the public and answers questions; responds to inquiries from public, supervisors, and other staff, when necessary, refers inquiries to appropriate persons.

  • Checks library materials in and out; processes overdue charges and fines.Keeps circulation statistics, reports and records.

  • Answers telephone calls and provides information or otherwise assists or refer patrons as appropriate.

  • Assists Youth/Teen Librarians by providing input in the evaluation, selection, and purchase of library materials.

  • Assists patrons in the selection of library materials and provides ready reference guidance as well as assistance in the use of computerized catalog, database searches and Internet use.

  • Runs reports, maintains library forms and procedures; shelves material; picks items for interlibrary loan; inputs data into computer.

  • Assists in maintaining library collections and facilities by reshelving and straightening books, chairs, shelves, papers and magazines, changing calendars, emptying book drops, and maintaining clean, safe work area.

  • Uses library information systems to find information and handle administrative tasks; works in the children’s area.

  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as picking up supplies needed for activities, making arrangements for use of library facilities, setting up tables and chairs for programs, etc.

  • Assists in carrying-out special programs or activities through scheduling, refreshments, reservations, set-up functions and implementation/participation.

  • Provides backup to related positions.

  • Performs other similar or related duties as required, or as situation dictates.

 

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate, some experience in library environment desirable.

  • Experience working with children and/or young adults.

  • Working knowledge of personal computers; Ability to accurately perform and document library procedures and to advance computer applications in library systems. Skill in operation of standard office equipment; personal computers and printers, light, laser scanners, copy machine,telephone, and other small office equipment including paper cutters, book binding equipment, etc.; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and public, both adults and children; ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to work with many, constantly changing computer-based information systems.

 

Type:  Full Time

Salary/Pay Rate:

Annual $39,680.68-$48,830.08; Bi-Weekly $1,526.18-$1,878.08
