Duties/Expectations:
The University Librarian (UL) at Brigham Young University leads the Harold B. Lee Library in its mission to:

Inspire life-long learning;
-
Improve discoverability of and access to resources;
-
Foster deep collaboration that produces new knowledge and facilitates learning;
-
Hire, develop and support library personnel so they can lead, facilitate, and respond to change;
-
Direct efforts to optimize the library’s physical spaces so as to facilitate collaboration, experimentation, creation, and discovery.
The UL articulates a compelling vision for the library, including understanding the contemporary needs of an academic library and planning for the ever-evolving Information Age. The UL advocates in behalf of the HBLL and librarianship in general within the university and among a broader community of patrons and professional colleagues. The UL is a steward of resources and a leader of groups and individuals–one who builds a community around common aspirations and successfully supervises groups and individuals with disparate goals and needs in a balanced and thoughtful manner.
Accountabilities

Participate on the University Deans Council

Advocate for library needs to university administrators

Set direction and provide leadership for all aspects of a major university research library

Create an environment that facilitates research and scholarly activity

Stay abreast of current library trends and develop appropriate library strategy for both print and digital resources

Lead an administrative council focused on creating a library that is receptive to the needs of faculty, students, and researchers
-
Communicate internally and externally regarding the mission of the university library
-
Provide leadership for the Friends of the Library Board
-
Identify and cultivate donors in support of the University’s inspiring learning initiative and the Library’s specific goals for student aid

Represent and take leadership responsibility in library regional and national organizations, including: Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC), Consortium of Church Libraries and Archives (CCLA), American Library Association (ALA)
