Children’s Librarian, Everett Public Libraries – Shute Branch, Everett, MA

The Children’s Librarian performs professional acquisition, collection development and maintenance, community outreach, and programming. The work is performed under the general direction of the Library Director. The Children’s Librarian is expected to work thirty-five (35) hours per week with alternating Saturdays and one evening shift.
(1) General Duties
The Children’s Librarian is responsible for overseeing the operation of a busy and engaging Children’s Room. Additionally, the Children’s Librarian shall: (a) assist with acquisitions of proper materials; (b) assist with the collection development for currency and relevancy, which includes working cooperatives with both technical services and circulation; (e) assist in policy review and writing as it pertains to children’s services; (d) create and maintain a welcoming environment for children and their caregivers; (e) keep abreast of trends and emerging technologies in children’s services; (f) routinely evaluate the procedures pertaining to children’s services and recommend improvements and/or modifications to the Director. Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Director, such as providing coverage for Teen and Adult services when necessary.
(2) Community Outreach
The Children’s Librarian shall establish and maintain good working relationships with community agencies which provide services to children and their caregivers. The Children’s Librarian shall also provide outreach to schools and other educational organizations. Lastly, the Children’s Librarian is expected to enthusiastically participate in community events, promoting library services and programs.
(3) Programming
The Children’s Librarian shall, under the direction of the Director: (a) create engaging, educational, and developmentally appropriate programming for children; (b) publicize library programming and services through traditional print media a§ weal as a variety of social naedia; (c) attend library meetings and participate in professional developmenfaetittes; .(d) p&fdrm related diities in cooperation with other staff and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Must have a demonstrated understanding of child development and enjoy working with children, their families, and their caregivers.
Must have previous experience in an automated network.
Educational Requirements
MLIS or MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution is highly preferred.

This is a full-time position with benefits.
This is a union position. The Children’s Librarian will become a member of ELSA.
Salary
$47,301 – $61,279. Salary commensurate with experience.
