Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian, Wright State University, Dayton, OH

Wright State University Libraries seeks a full time Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian. This position serves as the liaison to the Humanities programs and several Social Science programs in the College of Liberal Arts, along with the University Identity Centers. The ideal candidate will have strong outreach and communication skills; ability to work with diverse constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and community; and strong instructional skills.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A.L.A. accredited M.L.S./M.L.I.S. by hire date

  • Minimum two years library experience (can include student or graduate student employment, internships or practicums)

  • Ability to establish relationships and work effectively with colleagues, students, faculty, and staff across campus

  • Ability to plan, design, implement, and assess services and programs

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving a culturally diverse community and fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion;

  • Ability to promote resources and services to diverse groups

  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork;

  • Knowledge of educational technologies and the ability to apply knowledge to the design and delivery of instruction;

  • Knowledge of library instructional assessment techniques;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;

  • Ability to manage time and set priorities;

  • Interest in scholarly achievement, professional development and service.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience providing academic library instruction

  • Previous experience or degree in humanities or social sciences

 

Essential Functions and Percent of Time 

40% Library Instruction:

Provide the following services to assigned departments, colleges and academic areas: Collaborate with faculty to design library research assignments that enhance student learning. Design and teach classes and workshops to educate students on effective library research strategies, content evaluation, and other information literacy skills. Conduct assessment in classes taught to gauge student learning. Design research guides of library resources to facilitate use by online learners. Consult with students and faculty individually to teach specific research skills and locate appropriate resources for assignments or research projects. Provide library instruction when requested by faculty, including nights and weekends. Record all teaching activities for library statistical purposes.

 

30% Liaison to Academic Departments:

Provide the following services to assigned departments, colleges and academic areas: Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and staff to effectively market and deliver library services and resources. Initiate new programs or services. Communicate with academic departments regarding library resources, services, or research needs. Manage the library collections in assigned subject areas by selecting appropriate library materials. Monitor academic department meetings, activities, and communication for opportunities to provide library services. Participate in new faculty, staff, and student orientations and other department/college activities

 

25% Reference Service:

Research, evaluate, and organize scholarly resources for faculty on specific topics or research questions. Counsel students and faculty individually regarding specific research assignments or projects. Deliver library research and information service at multiple service points. Provide library service when scheduled, including nights and weekends. Participate in department planning, operations, and meetings. Record all service transactions for library statistical purposes.

 

5% Professional Development and Service:

Participate in professional development and continuing education endeavors for professional and personal growth. Engage in service opportunities for the library profession, university, or local community. Participate in the development and the performance of the libraries’ programs, policies, procedures, projects, teams and committees including other duties as assigned.

 

Schedule 

M-F 8:30 – 5:00 with occasional nights and weekends as required.
