The Libraries

Serving three campuses, the University of Washington Libraries is one of the largest and most innovative libraries in North America with collections exceeding 9 million volumes, over 1 million electronic books, more than 120,000 currently received journal titles, as well as millions of scholarly resources in other formats. Beyond the strength of local collections and digital resources, the Libraries is recognized for its excellent service, innovative learning and research spaces, faculty partnerships, global reach, extensive assessment efforts, and diverse award-winning staff. The Libraries plays a significant leadership role regionally as a member in the groundbreaking Orbis Cascade Alliance and throughout the profession as evidenced by the number of its staff selected for competitive leadership programs and honored by professional association lifetime achievement awards.

Cataloging and Metadata Services

Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) is one of the departments in the Collections & Content portfolio of the University of Washington Libraries. CAMS has 29 members: 18 classified staff and 11 librarians organized in four units. The Libraries uses OCLC’s cataloging and metadata services, a consortial implementation of the Alma library management system, and the Primo discovery service. CAMS catalogs monographs, serials, and integrating resources in all formats and subjects and in numerous languages according to national cataloging standards. CAMS also plays the leading role in setting UW Libraries cataloging policy in conjunction with other units. It provides subject analysis and authority work for digital collections and electronic theses and dissertations on multiple platforms. It leads the development of non-MARC metadata standards and applications within the Libraries, and offers various metadata services across campus as needed. CAMS also assumes local responsibility for the Resource Management module of the Alma shared library management system. UW Libraries is active in all four programs of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, and SACO), and has consistently been one of the largest contributors of new LC subject, genre/form, and demographic group authority records. CAMS staff are active in national library organizations such as ALA, OLAC, MLA, and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, as well as the regional Orbis Cascade Alliance. There is also selective participation in regional, national, and/or international metadata projects. Additional information about the department is available at http://www.lib.washington.edu/cams.
