Library Assistant, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

*Please note, this is a less than half time job working 14 hrs max per week.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Shelving materials. The assistant will shelve new and returned library materials. After training, excellent accuracy for putting materials in exact call number order is required.
- Shifting collections. The assistant will follow specific instructions move library materials in order to redistribute empty space for collection growth. Moving book trucks, boxes, bins or other objects may be necessary.
- Shelf-reading collection. The assistant will compare call numbers on books in the stacks to identify and pull items that are not in exact order for reshelving.
- Other duties. The assistant will perform other related tasks as assigned by a supervisor, such as online searching or updates of library materials.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift books and bins or boxes up to 40 pounds and handle and move heavy volumes on a continual basis.
- Ability to stretch, squat, reach, stoop, bend and pivot.
- Good close vision, especially, the ability to read call numbers on books in the stacks and on physical books during processing.
Work Environment:
- Job is performed in a library/office environment.
- Some exposure to dust or mold.
Additional Information
This is an unbenefited position and pay is dependent on hours worked. Approval for requests for time off during these periods is at the discretion of the supervisor and will be based on business need.
Basic Qualifications
- Facility with computers and computer programs is required.
- Experience working in a library, especially in handling, pulling and/or packing library materials highly desirable.
- Experience using electronic library applications, including online database searching within Hollis, is desirable.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to communicate questions or problems clearly and in a timely manner to the supervisor.
- Good attendance, punctuality and overall dependability.
- Capacity to absorb training, follow detailed instructions, and produce accurate results within given benchmarks.
- Ability to exercise individual initiative, when required.
