Temporary Part-Time Youth Services Librarian, Hanson Public Library, Hanson, MA

The Hanson Public Library is seeking a temporary part-time Youth Services Librarian who is enthusiastic about public service. The ideal candidate will be a strongly collaborative, flexible team player and a self-motivated quick learner who is able to handle a variety of tasks. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads a storytime on Saturday mornings geared to ages 0-3.

  • Updates the online events calendar with information about upcoming programs.

  • Assists other Youth Services staff with the planning and implementation of children’s programming.

  • Helps with preparations for the summer reading program.

  • Suggests items to purchase and remove from the children’s collection.

  • Informs patrons about various services that the Library offers.

  • Assists patrons with locating library materials.

  • Provides readers’ advisory guidance to children. 

  • Assists patrons with both Library equipment and personally-owned devices, including computers, printers, photocopiers, scanners, smartphones, tablets, and eBook readers.

  • Performs various circulation duties and works at the circulation desk as needed. 

  • Undertakes special projects as assigned by the Library Director.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to conduct a storytime for young children and their parents/caregivers which includes singing, moving, and reading aloud. 

  • A pleasant personality and demonstrated ability to work effectively with others. 

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with patrons, day care providers, teachers, vendor representatives, community groups, volunteers, parents, and library staff. 

  • A commitment to providing a high level of public service.

  • Ability to carry out assignments independently and exercise good judgment in decision making. 

  • Basic knowledge of computers, including the ability to search the Internet and other electronic databases. Experience using SirsiDynix Workflows preferred.

  • Familiarity with children’s literature.

  • General knowledge of library principles and practice.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Experience working with children, preferably in a library setting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Schedule: 6 hrs per week, to include nights and weekends. 

Salary: $19.37 per hour.
