Pre and Lower School Teaching Librarian, Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, NY

The Packer Collegiate Institute seeks an energetic individual to join its library team as a Pre and Lower School Teacher Librarian. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach research skills to elementary school students and integrate technology into these lessons

  • Foster an environment of creativity and innovation, and a love of reading and learning

  • Develop, acquire, and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students, the instructional strategies of the school’s faculty and the school’s mission

  • Maintain an attractive, dynamic, current and well-stocked library conducive to reading, study, and research

  • Partner with the Literacy Coordinator to support students’ development as readers and build effective classroom collections

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Pre and Lower Schools and participate in interdisciplinary instruction and curriculum development

  • Manage the library during busy morning hours for children, parents, and caregivers

  • Maintain a circulation system that ensures the prompt return of materials and their ready availability to other borrowers

  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and knowledgeable researchers

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s of Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited program is preferred 

  • Additional degree in Education a plus

  • Five years of librarian experience 

  • At least three years of experience in a school library preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of and enthusiasm for children’s literature and the ability to be an effective resource for students, teachers, and families

  • Demonstrated experience and passion for educating children through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens

  • A sincere commitment to professional development and investigating emerging trends in school library services

  • Passionate about working with and inspiring students

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Flexibility, positivity, and a sense of humor
