Museum Technology Specialist, Historic New England, Boston, MA
Posted February 5, 2020
Classification: Full-time
Location: This position may be based at a Historic New England office location or may be structured as a predominantly or periodic remote position. Regardless of office location, the job requires periodic on-site presence throughout our network of historic sites and regional offices to conduct IT maintenance. Candidate must reside in a New England state and the position requires a valid driver’s license and means of transportation.
Description: While some of our sites date from the horse-and-buggy days, Historic New England’s IT team works daily to bring the latest technologies into production for our staff and the 200,000 people who visit our museums each year. The Museum Technology Specialist is a key member this team, fielding help desk inquiries, overseeing hardware and software upgrades, assisting with infrastructure implementation and evaluation, and carrying out application support and deployment. In addition to day-to-day operations, the position also works on a wide range of projects–everything from collections and digital asset and database management to telecommunications, networking, and website development.
Historic New England has embraced the use of technology to carry out its mission. Recent projects include major overhauls of our web presence; implementation of a modern, database-driven CRM solution; development of custom touchscreen kiosk applications; and even the creation of a new crowdsourcing platform to support transcription of letters from the late 1800s.
This is a technology job with a heart–an opportunity to help a mission-driven organization while gaining exposure to a wide-range of enterprise IT systems.
Qualifications: You are great with technology, and love figuring things out. A technology-related degree is helpful, but we’ll also consider relevant experience. Prior experience working with museums, libraries, or nonprofits is a big plus.
You have broad experience with IT–everything from Active Directory to TCP networking (we rely heavily on Cisco Meraki) to email, office, databases, digital imaging, etc. Knowledge of SQL and/or scripting languages like PHP or Windows Powershell, etc. is a plus, but not a requirement. You’ll be eager to learn what you don’t already know. We do a little of everything, so this is a great place to build up broad IT experience.
Knowledge of domain-specific systems like Tessitura, ResourceSpace, Minisis, etc. is a plus, as is experience supporting web apps and LAMP-based backend systems like WordPress. Maybe you’ve even worked with other enterprise technologies we use like Hyper-V, AWS, SQL Server, Exchange on Office 365, AzureAD, Cisco Call Manager, etc.
You have the ability to work with a variety of users with a broad range of computer skill levels. You’re good at juggling multiple priorities, and know how to gently triage issues. (Not everything is an emergency, despite what some people might tell you.)
This position may require occasional work outside of normal business hours, but we will strive to accommodate your schedule as much as possible.
Compensation: $24.25/hour
Applications: Please send resume, salary requirements, and cover letter to [email protected].
