Arlington is home to a public library system of two: the main Robbins Library located in the center of town, and the Fox Branch Library in vibrant East Arlington. “The Fox” is a dynamic community hub that’s seen a 50% increase in circulation over the past decade, and has a reputation for innovation. We’re in search of a compassionate, creative professional who is eager to gain experience in programming and collection development for children. Additionally, resources are available on an annual basis to support continued professional development opportunities.
Schedule: Monday 9-5, Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday 12-8, Thursday 9-5. Alternating Fridays and Saturdays 9-5 p.m.; every Friday 9-5 in July and August (Fox Library is closed on summer Saturdays).
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities
In conjunction with the Fox Branch Manager, the librarian will perform professional library work involving responsibility for the development and execution of children’s library programs, book selection and other services at the Fox Library. In addition some adult reference work is required. The Fox Children’s Librarian attends monthly meetings of the Children’s Services team at Robbins Library, and participates in related library-wide initiatives.
Supervision Received
Under the supervision of the Fox Branch Manager, the employee plans and arranges work within established parameters.
Supervision Exercised
May direct, assist, check and review the work of assigned circulation staff, pages, volunteers and other related staff. In the absence of the Branch Manager, and as needed, position has responsibility for the care of the facility and oversight of library operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory service to children, their parents and teachers, and other adults working with children at the Fox Library.

Assists Fox Branch Librarian in planning, development and evaluation of library services; interprets policies and regulations for staff and patrons.

Use the integrated library system (Sierra) to locate materials for patrons within the Minuteman Library Network.

Plan and execute programs for infants through teens, and occasionally for their teachers and parents.

Initiate requests for the purchase of library materials for children based on knowledge of community needs, review of professional journals and children’s literature and the library’s selection policy. As required, update collections, see that materials which are no longer needed or used are removed.

Make cataloging decisions before materials are processed by Technical Services.

Assist the Fox Branch Manager with a wide variety of professional duties including: community outreach, preparing PR materials, updating social media including calendars, plus basic technology assistance and troubleshooting.

Respond to library users’ requests, suggestions and complaints in a timely manner. Refer issues to Fox Branch Manager as needed.

Maintain records of activities and prepare monthly reports for supervisor.

Keep abreast of developments in children’s programming; attend meetings of the Children’s Services Department and professional organizations.

May be asked to work at other locations as needed.

Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
MLS Degree from an ALA accredited and recognized school with specific course work or concentration in children’s programming and literature, one year of professional library experience working with children; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work. Broad knowledge of children’s literature. Familiarity with Massachusetts curriculum frameworks. Knowledge of child development. Knowledge of library science theories, principles and techniques.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and the public. Ability to interact with people of all ages. Ability to coordinate work flow and adapt to a variety of tasks and situations.
Supervisory, planning and organizational skills. Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills.
Familiarity with internet, electronic databases, social media, and basic computer applications. Ability to effectively use Town IT equipment and software including computer skills in MS Word and Excel.
Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, service and programming trends for children, and urban public library issues.
Performance of duties requires strong communication skills and the ability to read for understanding and analytical purposes.
Physical Requirements
Work performed in the library requires minimal physical effort.
