The Records and Privacy (R&P) unit, part of Infrastructure Operations (IO) at GAO, is seeking current Masters students in library and information science programs to apply for a summer internship. We welcome those who have coursework in records/information management, archival studies, management and administration, information systems analysis, cybersecurity, privacy, metadata, and database design.

Responsibilities
Interns will work on various assignments within one of GAO’s Administrative Professional and Support Staff (APSS) offices:
Audit Policy and Quality Assurance (APQA): Assist in GAO annual internal inspection which will provide them insight in quality management
Chief Administrative Office (CAO) Insider Threat: Intern will learn how to conduct risk assessments in order to triage potential insider threats. Intern will assist the GAO Insider Threat Program in identifying agency-wide vulnerabilities that could be exploited by insider threats, and developing mitigation strategies. Intern will collect and analyze data, develop data-based findings and conclusions.
Chief Administrative Office (CAO): Interns will work with internal stakeholders to collect and analyze data to spot trends and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal GAO operations for CAO administrative functions, including information technology, human capital, infrastructure operations, field operations, internal communications, budget and financial operations.
Continuous Process Improvement (CPI): Support agency-wide process improvement and change management projects including documenting work processes, gathering and analyzing data, facilitating and documenting focus groups, gathering business requirements for information technology systems and assisting with implementation, implementing project management, and creating written communications.
Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting documents and data for record management purposes; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO’s best practices.
Human Capital Office (HCO): Perform a full-range of analytical and technical work assignments to support GAO’s human resources functions such as researching human capital trends and leading practices, processing personnel and payroll actions, developing recruitment strategies and communications materials, and enhancing organizational diversity and inclusion program.
Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS), Budget, Acquisition, and Contracts Group (BACG): Assist in performing budget and procurement formulation and administration duties using Financial and MS office systems.
Infrastructure Operations (IO): Perform analytical studies focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various business operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of facility management, security and emergency management, and records management.
Learning Center (LC): Provide course development assistance to the agency’s learning & talent development unit, including instructional systems design (ISD) and other methods. This includes the analysis, development and implementation of classroom, webinar, and eLearning courseware.
Office of the General Counsel (OGC): Assist management with a variety of administrative support functions, including receptionist duties when needed, filing, copying, scheduling, and correspondence; assist managers with updating attorney recruiting materials utilizing automated systems; support attorneys on projects, including researching and retrieving GAO and OGC records and historical documents; provide overall administrative support to attorneys and paralegals; assist paralegals with maintaining data systems.
Public Affairs (PA): Assist with the product line steering committee and working groups; reaching new communications platforms and new features of existing communications platforms.
Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Intern will help develop tools and methods to advance the strategic planning process, promote dialogue within accountability community, improve event coordination and planning tools, and support the Managing Director’s long-term agenda.
Qualifications
All qualification requirements must be met by the start of the internship.
To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must be enrolled in a graduate or equivalent degree seeking program, and meet one of the following criteria:
1. You must have completed between 18 to 35 semester hours or 27 to 53 quarter hours of graduate level education; or
2. You must possess a Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (defined below).
Superior Academic Achievement:
- Superior academic achievement (SAA) recognizes individuals who have achieved superior academic standing. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
- Class standing — Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
- Grade-point average (G.P.A.)– Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a.3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or .3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B+” or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
To qualify for the GS-9 level, you must be enrolled in a graduate or equivalent degree seeking program, and meet one of the following criteria:
1. You must have completed 36 or more semester hours or 54 or more quarter hours of graduate level education; or
2. You must possess a Master’s Degree or Equivalent Graduate degree.
Note: See the Qualifications section of this announcement for more details on who may apply and how to qualify for a Summer 2020 GAO internship. If at any point during the internship (and for any reason) your status as a student changes to that of a non-student, your internship will be terminated.
Salary: $48,670 to $59,534 per year
