The Librarians-in-Residence program gives early-career librarians the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience in at least one track of the following: Acquisitions and Collection Development, Cataloging and Metadata, Systems and Standards, Reference and Instruction, and Collection Preservation.
The Librarians-in Residence will receive on-the-job training and undertake assignments that contribute to the ongoing mission and work of the Library of Congress. In addition, they will participate in enrichment activities and receive mentoring from seasoned Library of Congress professionals. As they become acquainted with the Library of Congress and its strategic goals, the program participants will understand the role of the world’s largest library and learn about its importance to Congress, the American people, and researchers nationally and abroad.
The Library of Congress will be looking for newly graduated librarians to bring their intellectual engagement, technological prowess, and theoretical understanding of library and information science concepts to bear on practical challenges. The Librarians-in-Residence will also be expected to present information from their educational experiences to Library of Congress staff in formal or informal settings
