Director of Library and Information Center, The Derryfield School, Manchester, NH

The Director of the Media and Information Center at The Derryfield School creates a dynamic, welcoming environment for the school’s community.   Located at the heart of the campus, the Center is a joyful learning space where resources can be accessed and enjoyed, where members of the community can collaborate, and where students can be instructed in critical, ethical and legal use of information. The Director is an educator and coordinator in our efforts to educate students to become excellent researchers, scholars, problem solvers, and informed citizens of civil and civic engagement.   In doing so, the Director will, in particular:

 

Instruction in Media Literacy and Research 

  • Develop with faculty a 6-12 scope and sequence, creating and evaluating rubrics, activities, lessons, assessments, for research, media, news, and digital literacy skills. 

    • Provide instruction to students in finding the best digital and print  information and media for the particular purpose defined by the individual.

    • Develop and co-teach media literacy units with teachers in various departments including skills such as critical thinking; close reading; evaluation of resources, including graphs and images; understanding of logical fallacies and false news; and how to be an ethical social media citizen. 

    • Instruct and serve as a resource on copyright issues and ethical use of various resources.

  • Teach information technology skills to all students so that all graduates will be able to locate, evaluate, and manage digital information resources and tools, including Springshare products LibGuidesfor managing library content, digital curation, and research  and digital tools to assist classes in research​ including NoodleTools and JSTOR. 

  • Instruct in the school’s professional development programs.

  • Create dynamic flexible learning spaces for introspective learning, group learning, informal peer-to-peer learning, and serendipitous learning. 

 

Information Access

  • Create a virtual and physical library space that is user-centered and accessible, including instructional tools, aids, guides, webpages, and tutorials as needed to actively promote resource sharing services

  • Select materials and technology which supports the school’s educational philosophy and curriculum. Create and organize a carefully curated collection of both digital and physical resources, including material that will encourage personal reading and intellectual curiosity, in accordance with the official Materials Selection Policy adopted by the Board of Trustees.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to age appropriate intellectual freedom and incorporate that commitment into materials selection and publicize the concept both formally and informally.

  • Serve on the Curriculum Committee of the school.

  • Curate resources to enhance the curriculum at different levels of complexity for different users and their needs.

  • Provide instruction in legal and ethical issues surrounding copyright law and plagiarism.

  • Recommend books, media, and online sites to faculty and students.

  • Provide and promote interlibrary loan services to faculty and students.

 

Technology Integration

  • Possess a high level of comfort with technology and the ability to learn new technology quickly and efficiently 

  • Maintain and enhance professional knowledge on current trends in technology through professional reading and by participating in professional organizations and activities relating to the library media program.

  • Provide professional development workshops and lessons on new tools and resources.

  • Create a dynamic, innovative learning space with flexible tech centers and displays

 

Program Administration

  • Develop short and long-range goals to guide the development of the library program.

  • Promote a love of reading through various programming initiatives.

  • Promote the library media program, services, and its materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff, parent volunteers, and the community.

  • Prepare articles and reports highlighting all aspects of the library program.

  • Attend literacy/technology/leadership team meetings, faculty meetings, administrative meetings, and department meetings.

  • Evaluate the library media program, services, facilities, and materials to ensure optimum use.

  • Oversee the library volunteers and their day-to-day tasks.

  • Prepare and oversee a library media program budget which will provide the best possible library program for the Derryfield School.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Library Studies. Master’s Degree a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience with diversity and inclusion.

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively successful experience managing a library.

  •  A passion for working with young people in a gentle way.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work within deadlines and with a team.

  • A high level of integrity and an extraordinary work ethic.
