About Hannon Library 

The Hannon Library of Southern Oregon University, committed to diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and located in beautiful Ashland, Oregon, is searching for a University Librarian to collaboratively set goals and energetically advocate for its strategic mission. The successful candidate will lead a passionate and engaged workforce with inventiveness, positivity, and determination.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA accredited master’s degree.
  • Earned doctorate or second subject master’s degree.
  • 7 years of increasingly responsible and successful management experience in an academic library.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with supportive organizations, such as a Friends of the Library.
  • Familiarity with academic accreditation processes.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a union environment with staff along with librarians that have full faculty status.
  • Demonstrated support for continuing education and professional development opportunities for all library employees.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Outstanding oral, written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the current technological information environment. Thorough understanding of the nature and inter-relationship of all operations of a contemporary academic library.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in academic librarianship. Knowledge of diverse research processes and how libraries support them.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, manage, and promote large scale campus and community-wide events. Comfortable performing a wide variety of administrative and operational tasks.
  • Experience and success in working with diverse populations of students.
  • Creative intellect and an entrepreneurial spirit.

 

Professional Experience

  • Proven record of collaborative leadership in a collegial environment. Demonstrated contribution to the profession through current scholarly publications and involvement in library organizations.
  • Comprehensive process knowledge of academic libraries and documented success in implementing innovative changes that result in high quality services and effective leadership. Successful experience managing a complex budget and making maximum use of resources. Experience with planning and managing library facilities. Demonstrated success in identifying and obtaining external funding to support library initiatives.

 

Leadership Characteristics 

  • Commitment to shared governance and participatory decision making. Advocacy for faculty status for librarians and understanding of the tenure process. Advocacy for the role of library staff in a collaborative library work environment.
  • Commitment to outreach to the university, community, and region.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive relationships with internal and external library constituents and stakeholders. Ability to articulate and advocate library initiative with energy and vision. Proven ability to carry out administrative duties in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Demonstrated pro-active leadership experience and ability to set a strategic vision for the library. Commitment to outcomes-based assessment.
  • Administrative experience using conflict resolution in managing problems within an academic setting.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization.
  • Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Special Conditions

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.

  • Position classification defined as “exempt” are not subject overtime
