Librarian for Conservation and Preservation, Carleton College, Northfield, MN

The Librarian for Conservation and Preservation is responsible for the operation and ongoing development of a library-wide preservation services program. This position oversees the proper handling, protection, and treatment of Carleton College’s Gould Library and Archives collections; selects materials for repair, replacement, reformatting, digitization, or stabilization; plans, manages, and executes in-house repairs and other treatments; and works with outside conservators to perform more involved treatment when necessary.

 

The Librarian for Conservation and Preservation provides training and guidance to Library staff and students on the proper care and handling of all physical materials and is responsible for the development and implementation of Library-wide emergency response plans for the entire collection. As a member of the Special Collections and Archives Department of Gould Library, the Librarian will participate in day-to-day operations of the department including student employee supervision, stack maintenance, handling of reference questions, and outreach.

 

Requirements

The ideal candidate must possess a master’s degree from a program in Library Science accredited by the American Library Association or a similar profession degree and two years’ work experience in the field. Demonstrate formal training and one or more years of experience performing conservation work on a wide variety of book and other paper materials in accordance with current principles, techniques, and procedures. Preferred qualities include three to five years of experience working in a research academic library, special collections, or archives environment.
