Carbondale Public Library seeks a Children’s Librarian to plan and implement a comprehensive program of library services to children, birth through junior high, and their caregivers. Some evenings and weekends required. Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school strongly preferred. Other degrees and library or youth services experience considered. At least one year experience in public library work and children’s services preferred. Full time (37.5 hours/week). Benefits: medical and life insurance, IMRF retirement plan, paid vacation and sick time. Starting salary range: $31,200 – $39,000 depending upon degrees and experience. Nature of Responsibility
Under the minimal supervision of the Library Director this employee is responsible for independently organizing, planning and implementing a comprehensive program of library services to children from birth through junior high, and their caregivers. The work requires the exercise of professional skill, initiative, enthusiasm, assertive communication, independent judgement, and fluency with technology.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, coordinates, and supervises the operation of children’s services.
- Plans, coordinates, and presents engaging programs for children and families in the library and community.
- Often works on children’s and intergenerational programs with coworkers or outside agencies.
- Selects materials for acquisition.
- Responsible for collection development and maintenance.
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory service.
- Instructs patrons in the use of computer services and other library resources.
- Provides services and programs to local schools and youth organizations.
- Markets and promotes children’s services in the media, online, and through community networking.
- Works closely with and supervises youth volunteers.
- Supervises library operations and support staff in the absence of the library Director.
- Supervises Youth Services Assistant.
- Advises technical services staff in the classification and cataloging of children’s materials.
- Participates as required in preparation of the annual budget and grant applications.
- Purchases children’s supplies, materials, and outside services within the library budget.
- Compiles statistics and reports monthly and as assigned.
- Assists in interpreting library policies and procedures.
- Assists in monitoring the behavior and conduct of library patrons.
- Prepares bibliographies, brochures, displays, etc.
- Assists at the circulation desk as needed.
- Other reasonable duties as required.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participates in continuing education and professional associations.
- Keeps informed of current trends and developments affecting libraries, youth, and the community.
Basic Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school strongly preferred.
- Other degrees and library or youth services experience considered.
- At least one year experience in public library work and children’s services preferred.
Abilities, Skills and Knowledge
Considerable knowledge of: professional practices, procedures and techniques of library science; children’s books and materials; reference tools and electronic information resources; library classification, along with a basic understanding of library cataloging.
Considerable skill in: leadership, supervision, planning, organization, project management, and teamwork; conducting reference interviews and providing customer service; selecting appropriate resources; evaluating collection strengths and weaknesses.
Considerable ability to: develop, coordinate, and promote library programs; assertively and enthusiastically lead large and small groups of children and families; interpret library resources and services to the public and community in general; communicate effectively orally and in writing; maintain a professional, enthusiastic and friendly demeanor; handle complaints, distractions and other stressful situations in a calm and professional manner; maintain discipline; multi-task, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Physically, the job requires: sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and moving books, rearranging furniture for programs and pushing carts up to 40 pounds. It requires sustained posture in a standing or seated position for prolonged periods of time and prolonged usage of computer and office equipment.
