The Atlanta University Center – Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs–Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.
The Archives Research Center at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library has a rich collection documenting the African American experience and the African Diaspora. It features manuscript writings and books, including first edition titles, limited printings autographed and rare publications. The extensive collection of books, personal papers, organizational and institutional records supports research in education, literature, the arts, religion, politics and society and community empowerment. Additionally, the AUC Woodruff Library serves as the custodian of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King.
Position Summary:
The Atlanta University Center – Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service. Notable accomplishments include, recipient of two Communicator Awards for print communication materials, recipient of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for HBCU Photographic Preservation Project Round II, and national recognition with the receipt of two awards in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards.
To continue our excellence in program and services, the library seeks a knowledgeable, engaging, dynamic, customer focused digital and reference archivist. Reporting to the Assistant Head of the Archives Research Center (ARC), and working as a member of the ARC team, this position provides administration of the department’s reference services. The Digital Archivist will model the Library’s customer service philosophy through recommendation and implementation of policies and procedures for reference efficiency and effectiveness, promotion of archival and special collections via programming, tours for visiting groups, reference management, and compilation of statistical and financial reports. This position requires evening work Monday through Thursday, and weekend work on a rotational basis.
Essential Duties

Facilitates access and conducts research within archival, manuscript and book collections to assist with in-person and remote inquiries regarding archival, manuscript and book collections

Assists the Assistant Head with the implementation of Instruction Services and course development

Recommends, updates, implements, and assesses reference policies and procedures

Coordinates public programming, social media campaigns, and messaging to promote archival and special collections and services

Develops procedures for managing born-digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organization, description, and access in collaboration with Digital Services Department,

Creates and updates archives research guides and processes archival digital collections
-
Coordinates and promotes digital exhibits

Coordinates reproduction services

Compiles and analyzes daily and monthly reference statistics and generates reports

Assists with maintenance of ARC’s special book collections
- Assists with the processing, preserving, and acquisition of archival, historical, and special collections materials
- Participates on department and library-wide committees and/or taskforces
- Participates in special project
- Contributes to the success of the Archives Research Center by performing all other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or Masters degree in History or Archival Science; academic and practical training in archival management

Strong knowledge of African American history and culture; educational background in related field preferred and highly desirable

Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, standards, and proper handling of materials

Knowledge of archival content, structure, and preservation metadata standards including MARC, EAD, DACS, MODS, PREMIS, etc.

Experience providing research, reference and instructional services

Demonstrated experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Suite

Demonstrated experience working with integrated library systems such as OCLC WMS and web resources available in an academic and/or public library

Experience with content management systems, Omeka, and ArchivesSpace, as well as XTF, highly desirable
