Teen Services (Young Adult) Librarian, Abbot Public Library, Marblehead, MA

Summary

Reporting to the Library Director, the Teen Librarian is responsible,  as a professional staff librarian, for providing services to the teen population (Grades 7 – 12), including: selecting materials, offering reference and reader’s advisory assistance, developing and presenting programs, and school and community involvement.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, organizes and supervises Teen Services, making recommendations for the selection of  books and other materials for the Teen Collections.

  2.  Assists teens in locating information, in using the Library’s online catalog and other electronic resources, and in choosing materials for school assignments and recreation.

  3. Plans and conducts regular programs for teens.

  4. Presents book talks and/or related programs to middle and/or high school classes, in library or in classroom.

  5. Compiles book lists on topics of interest to teens. 

  6. Plans exhibits and displays to encourage knowledge and use of library resources.

  7. Provides  reference services to both teens and adults

  8. Contributes data to be used in planning library budget and maintains divisional expenditures within approved budget.

  9. Orders and participates in cataloging of teen material, operates library material reserve system, performs circulation functions, and searches data bases for reference and research purposes.

  10. Keeps current with YA literature and developments in teen services; represents library at young adult professional meetings and seminars.

  11. Performs other duties of a similar nature and complexity as directed.

 

Qualifications

  • Commitment to excellent customer service with demonstrated skills for working with teens.

  • Proficiency in current and emerging trends in library technologies. 

  • Knowledge of search techniques using print and electronic resources and an ability to instruct others in their use.

  • Experience using a library automated system and programs; office applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, and social media. 

  • Strong skills as a team player and collaborator.

 

Preferred Background

MLS Degree or BA degree with significant related experience
