Archival Processing Intern, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME

The Archival Processing Intern will work under the direction of the Archivist to reprocess the papers of noted Arctic explorers Donald and Miriam MacMillan. The project will physically and/or intellectually reunite dispersed materials into one comprehensive collection and bring its collection guide up to current archival descriptive and cataloging standards. The intern will refine and implement a processing plan for the collection, expand the current series and subseries structure to accommodate unprocessed sections and highlight important expeditionary records, and rehouse materials in archival boxes and folders to ensure their long-term preservation. The intern will input descriptive data into ArchivesSpace, adhering to national standards and local practice. The intern will be assisted by one or more student workers.
Education Requirements
Must be a recent graduate or currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program pursuing a degree in library and information science, archival studies/administration, museum studies or a related field.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Good organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently after initial training. Ability to climb ladders, bend and stoop to access and move collection enclosures and lift archival boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
Experience Requirements
Some experience processing, arranging and describing archival collections desired. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Excel and Word). Experience with ArchivesSpace collection management software a plus. Familiarity with primary sources and experience working with and researching in archives.
Schedule
This is a paid internship with a duration of 520 hours to begin in January 2020 and to conclude by August 31, 2020. Weekly work schedule (Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm) is flexible based on academic commitments but cannot exceed 19 hours/week.
