The Archdiocese of Boston serves approximately 1.8 million Catholics residing in 144 different communities in eastern Massachusetts. The archive, research library, and much of the archdiocesan administration are located at the Pastoral Center in Braintree, Massachusetts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Archivist I will work closely alongside other archive staff members to collect, preserve, and improve access to records from the parishes, schools, and administrative offices of the Archdiocese of Boston.
The individual who fulfills this position will be expected to spend about half of his/her time on reference inquiries, largely relating to genealogy or local Catholic history. The other half of his/her time will be processing collections, creating finding aids, and helping to share collections with the public.
He/She may also be asked to accompany archive staff on visits to parishes, schools, or offices to assess records management practices; help create exhibits; and other tasks as needed.
Qualifications:

At least 2 years of part- or full-time experience in a library, archive, or similar setting.

Masters degree in Library or Information Science preferred.

Must be able to read and transcribe cursive handwriting.

Must be able to communicate in a professional manner, including in writing and by telephone.

Must be willing to support the mission of the Catholic Church.
Recent graduates of a Master of Library Science program will be considered for the position if they meet the above qualifications. Students without the requisite experience may contact Human Resources about internship opportunities for class credits.
