Position Overview
Reporting to the Director, the Head of Adult Services manages the Reference & Information Services Department which includes the Archives and Museum (3 FTE). This position also oversees all aspects of Adult Services to best meet the needs of library patrons and achieve the goals set by the Director. In the absence of the Director, the Head of Adult Services will be responsible for the operations of the library, including staff supervision and responding to emergencies.
Essential Duties:
1. Primary duty is to oversee all aspects of Reference and Information Services Department; plans, organizes, and supervises the activities and goal-setting in the Reference Department including: answering patrons’ reference and technology-related questions; providing reference staff direction and training; developing the reference and non-fiction collections; overseeing the development of historical, archival and museum collections.
2. Oversee and coordinate Adult services, events, and programs to best fulfill the mission and goals of the library and evaluate yearly (12 FTE).
3. Integrate archival best practices, archival and museum knowledge in Reference staff
4. Establish short and long-range goals, objectives and priorities.
5. Provide inclusive, engaging and dynamic customer service including reference, reader’s advisory and basic technology assistance.
6. Oversee staffing and collections and conduct yearly reviews for the Adult Services staff
7. Stays informed of professional issues and library trends.
8. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

Masters of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited program.

Three to five years providing reference and information services in a public library.

Experience with current information technologies and developments in all areas related to public libraries. Ability to teach those technologies to patrons is necessary.

Excellent customer service and three years’ experience in management.

Excellent written and oral communication.

Adept in evaluating, using and recommending reference sources and teaching research techniques and standards, both online and in print.

Experience with museums and archives is preferred.
