Archives Assistant (Photo/Audio Visual), University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY

The American Heritage Center of the University of Wyoming is seeking an Assistant Reference Archivist with primary responsibility for photo and audio-visual requests, who is a creative, dynamic, articulate, and out-going professional. Position is part of the Reference Services unit.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Professional Practice: Supports the academic mission of the University of Wyoming. The Assistant Archivist serves as the primary contact for photo and audio-visual research inquiries; keeps informed of available technology, and actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate function; Performs general reference service for the American Heritage Center patrons and works at least one half-day shift per week on the reading room desk.  Provides tours and cooperates with other archivists to teach research and information literacy skills to students to support UW’s general education curriculum.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work well under pressure, work well in a team-environment; demonstrate self-confidence, and professional creativity. As a faculty archivist, the candidate will be engaged in collection development, donor relations, public programs, research and/or creative activity, University and professional service. The candidate will supervise part-time workers, and will assist in basic repair/maintenance of A/V equipment.

 

Supplemental Functions:

Other duties as assigned.   The position reports to the Manager of Reference Services.

 

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications

  • MA, MLS, MLIS, or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and existing work experience with historical documents with emphasis on photographic and audio-visual collections

  • Knowledge of scanning software (such as Photoshop), scanning equipment, printers and common audio, film and video playback equipment

  • Knowledge of archives collections/practices and reference duties

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and time management skills

  • Analytical abilities

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

  • Familiarity and experience with photo and audio-visual formats, history, and preservation concerns.

  • Experience working with historical materials

  • Experience providing reference services, instruction, and tours.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of archival principles and practices.

  • Demonstrated capacity for (or evidence of) service and scholarship consistent with the requirements of faculty archivists at the AHC.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • MA, MLS/MLIS, or equivalent

  • Experience providing reference services with photographic and audio-visual materials, and in a reading room setting

  • Experience teaching information literacy in an archival setting and providing repository tours

  • Evidence of professional leadership

  • Commitment to active participation in regional and national organizations, presentation of papers and submission of articles, and continuing education.
