Manager of Technology and Training, Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick, ME

Curtis Memorial Library has an exciting opportunity for a creative, energetic technology professional with a passion for teaching and training and the skills to keep the library’s technology tools and systems running smoothly.

The successful candidate will have a flair for working with people of varied ages and abilities; proficiency with a variety of computer applications and systems; familiarity with emerging technology services and equipment, and the desire to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Located in beautiful mid-coast Maine, Curtis Memorial Library is a dynamic community center serving a population area of 25,000 in the towns of Brunswick and Harpswell, with over 900 visits a day.  The area offers a rich array of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities and a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly downtown.

Nature of Work

Manages technology services and equipment throughout the library, including IT, social media, digital collections, and technology training for library staff and patrons, with some supervisory responsibility.  Leads and supports the library’s mission and core values and participates as a member of the library’s senior management team; reports to Library Director.  Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.

Primary Responsibilities

Participates in strategic planning for technology, including defining needs and goals, evaluating and recommending solutions, planning and managing the technology budget, and developing policy and procedures for the use of technology

Leads in the development and implementation of dynamic technology services, presentations, and participatory experiences for patrons and staff.

  • Works with management team to identify staff training needs; trains staff in the use of technologies and digital media and encourages integration of innovative technologies throughout the library
  • Identifies and stays current with community/service areas and understands their technological needs and interests; cultivates relationships with community members to garner feedback
  • Develops and leads technology programs for the public and prepares related digital and print tutorials and guides
  • Provides technical support for staff and patrons; troubleshoots and resolves problems with library technology and prepares documentation for use in troubleshooting

Serves as administrator for network telecommunications, IT system security, staff intranet, data management, public PCs, printers, WiFi, security camera support, cloud computing, data backup and disaster recovery, including new installations and upgrades and day to day maintenance of hardware and software

Provides leadership in designing, developing and supporting the library’s online, mobile, and digital presence, including website and digitization projects and utilization of social media in the promotion of library programs and services to increase public awareness, interest, and participation

Identifies technology trends that will impact libraries. Embraces innovation and experimentation and recommends thoughtful change to help the library stay relevant and vital

Compiles and interprets statistics and prepares reports; serves as compliance officer for the library’s participation in the federal E-rate program

Establishes and maintains positive vendor relationships, including support for the library’s network management vendor (BEK)

Supervises Digital Services Librarian and volunteers recruited to assist in technology-related areas

May provide basic reference assistance and instruction at a service desk

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of providing library technology services in public libraries; relevant technical standards; and trends and issues in the field
  • Proficiency with automated library systems and other computer applications including operating systems and thin clients, Microsoft Office, web authoring software and social media; familiarity with emerging technology services and equipment
  • Experience in managing networked databases and servers or related technical experience
  • Ability to effectively analyze and resolve technology issues and troubleshoot computer software and hardware problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing, including facility with public speaking and training and with creating instructional materials
  • Ability to independently learn new technical applications
  • Ability to use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with library patrons, employees, outside businesses and organizations
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs, recognize and set priorities, and plan and organize own work
  • Customer-focused and friendly
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring some bending, lifting, pushing, and walking; sufficient manual dexterity, ability to speak, and vision to perform job-specific tasks
  • Availability to work a varied schedule, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically
  • Preferred experience:
    Teaching and training
    Supervisory
    BS in Computer Science or related field supplemented by experience with technology integration and/or equivalent training and experience
    MLS degree from an ALA-accredited school and/or equivalent training and experience

Salary range is $49,400 – $55,800, commensurate with experience.
