Information and Technical Services actively supports the teaching and research mission of the Harvard Library by managing monograph, serials, and e-resource acquisitions, metadata creation, and metadata management for the Harvard Library. Under the supervision of the Manager for Serials Acquisitions and Management, the incumbent’s primary assignment is to focus on two projects: managing the project to support the serials review of print titles for shift to the electronic format or to be cancelled for the HCL libraries; records and workflow support as the Library integrates remote processing operations from four locations into the central hubs at Langdell Hall and 625 Mass. Ave. The incumbent will work with collection development staff, technical services staff, subscription agents, publishers, and other materials vendors. The position will be based at 625 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square and may be required to perform duties in multiple Harvard Library locations across campus.
This is an 18-month term position. The term end date is December 21, 2018.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees special projects from the Serials Acquisitions aspect related to a print serials review including documentation, statistics, and recommendations on operational changes
- Coordinates project planning and implementation involving units external to ITS including Harvard College Library collection development,
- Communicates with bibliographers about the availability of collections funds, collaborates with them to resolve acquisitions, and assists with maintaining replacement fund wiki page Identifies, suggests, and implements innovations and generates ideas with unit manager and staff for improving workflows and creating efficiencies within unit and across units Initiates changes to systems and procedures and implements and executes approved changes; collaborates with manager and staff, in the unit and across units in planning of new projects and work initiatives
- Works with personnel in the unit and across units to develop criteria and documentation for updated workflows
- Creates and updates training for unit and across units
- Corresponds with publishers and vendors and works with vendors and library staff Works on resolution of complex order, receipt, invoice, bibliographic and holdings problems
- Serves as a liaison with other related library units within or outside the University
- Participates in unit and across unit planning and implementation of new policies and procedures
- Trains, schedules, and distributes work to other staff, student workers and temp positions
- Hires student workers and approves student time in PeopleSoft
- Contributes to the overall goals of the ITS department as appropriate
Basic Qualifications
- High School degree or equivalent education or work experience required
- Minimum of four years of library work experience or directly related progressively responsible experience required, including skills with an integrated library system and online bibliographic systems;
- Aleph experience preferred
- At least 3 years direct experience working with serial publications, library acquisitions, or library materials vendors/subscription agents
- Significant organizational and supervisory skills required
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and stakeholders across the University
- Demonstrated experience using technology to perform daily tasks and solve problems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows operating system and Windows software required.
- Demonstrated facility with automated systems, including using online databases, working with spreadsheets
- Competency in keyboarding
Additional Qualifications
- College degree preferred
- Must have excellent organizational, written communication and analytical skills
- Library acquisitions and basic cataloging experience strongly preferred
- Work experience in a production-oriented and technology-enhanced environment preferred Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent English language communication skills;familiarity with Western European languages desirable
- Ability to perform repetitive work accurately with fine attention to details
- Ability to work productively and cooperatively in a team environment, with flexibility and versatility in an evolving work situation required
- Ability to work independently to perform complex tasks
- Ability to meet project deadlines
- Commitment to be part of a continuous learning environment, updating skills as required to perform job duties
- Academic library work experience highly desirable
- Ability to prioritize and organize various workflows for the unit and across units
- Must demonstrate strong leadership skills with a team-based attitude
Physical Demands
- May require keyboarding for at least six hours a day
This position may involve occasionally lifting and moving loads weighing in excess of 40 pounds and requires bending, squatting, stretching, and climbing small step stools when needed to retrieve materials and shelve them.
