Davidson College seeks a collaborative and innovative Project Archivist for Justice, Equality, Community Archives for a three-year grant-funded position. This archivist will be an active participant in a college-wide project which advances students’ understanding of structural inequalities and addresses the manifestations of justice and equality in various communities through a humanistic lens. In collaboration with the E. H. Little Library’s Research, Teaching, and Collection team, college faculty and staff, and the public at large, the archivist will enhance stewardship of and access to archival materials in order to support increased dialogue and curricular initiatives surrounding justice, equality, and community, beginning with the issue of race and religion at Davidson and in our region. The person in this position will facilitate transdisciplinary interactions in the humanities, promote original student research, and enable Davidson to develop reciprocal relationships and programming with community partners. The Project Archivist may also participate in additional archival and library-wide initiatives. Funding will be provided for professional development to maintain awareness of trends and developments within the various disciplines.
Primary Responsibilities
Instruction and Outreach
- Work with faculty and staff to integrate materials into humanities courses and civic engagement initiatives in ways that were not previously possible
- Create an online presence, including social media, for the Justice, Equality, and Community archives
- Develop and present programs to promote collections to the public
- Promote avenues for increased original student research in the humanities
- Participate in research assistance and instruction for archives and special collections
Digitization
- Identify Davidson College collections for inclusion in the Justice, Equality, and Community digital archives
- Locate personal, community, and topical collections and develop partnerships for cooperative digitization projects
- Develop policies and procedures for the digitization of project materials in consultation with the Digital Archivist
- Manage the creation of administrative, preservation, and access metadata for project collections and oral histories in collaboration with other professionals on campus
- Coordinate the digitization of project collections, including the supervision of student workers
Collection Development
- Identify and acquire relevant materials for the Justice, Equality, and Community archives, in cooperation with library professionals, faculty, and community partners
- Coordinate an engaging oral history program
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or Master’s degree in Public History
- Formal education in archival theory and practice
- Internship, practicum, or experience in an archives, a manuscript repository, or a related entity
- Understanding of the evaluation of archival materials for inclusion in a collection
- Experience with instruction and/or public programming
- Proficiency in facilitating dialogues among numerous stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors, and the public and to maintain an attitude of flexibility
- Strong commitment to working with diverse groups and underrepresented communities
Desired Qualifications
- Academic interest in a field related to the grant, such as American religious history, Africana studies, race relations, gender studies, or indigenous history
- Mastery of digitization standards for various media
- Familiarity with oral history standards and procedures
- Skill with current technologies and social media
- Supervisory experience
- Experience using ArchivesSpace software and related metadata cataloging practice
