Project Archivist, Special Collections, Williams College Libraries, Williamstown, MA

We are pleased to announce an opening for a full-time, one-year term appointment of Project Archivist for the Paul Whiteman Collection with the Special Collections department of the Williams College Libraries. Reporting to the College Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, the Project Archivist will coordinate the processing of the Paul Whiteman Collection and create an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid. The Project Archivist will work in consultation with staff from the College Archives and Special Collections to follow processing standards and plans, create standardized descriptions, and ensure consistency and quality for the overall project. 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the arrangement, appraisal, and description of a large, complex, multi-format manuscript collection
  • Manage and create descriptive and structural metadata following archival metadata standards
  • Create an Encoded Archival Description finding aid for entire collection
  • In coordination with the College Archivist and Digital Resources Archivist, develop a plan for the description of analog audio and video materials and outsourcing for digitization
  • Provide reference assistance to staff, faculty, students and outside researchers at the Special Collections reference desk
  • Hire, train, supervise, and develop projects for student assistants

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS  from an ALA-accredited institution; 1 year related experience; recent graduates are encouraged to apply
  • Established understanding and knowledge of the principles of archival appraisal, survey, arrangement, description, preservation, and Encoded Archival Description
  • Direct experience with processing collections and creating EAD finding aids preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of descriptive and structural standards such as MODS, Dublin Core, DACS, LCSH, EAD, and MARC
  • Demonstrated consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the values of a liberal arts education preferred
  • Ability to work with the public, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a commitment to serving students, staff, faculty and the public in a courteous manner
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, climb a ladder, stoop and reach in a variety of physical locations
