The Indiana University Libraries seeks a creative and forward-thinking professional to manage the library’s scholarly communication efforts. Reporting to the Head, Scholarly Communications, this position provides operational oversight for specific areas of the Library’s scholarly communications program. This is an IUB Libraries’ assistant/associate librarian appointment with its attendant responsibilities and privileges and works directly with faculty and researchers to provide services focusing on publishing and disseminating scholarly materials and adopting practices that maximize the impact of faculty research and writing while protecting their intellectual property. Working in collaboration with liaison librarians, this individual will lead efforts to educate and advise the campus community on issues of open access, Creative Commons and other alternative licensing models, digital publication, open textbooks and other open educational resources, and alternative metrics for measuring research impact.

The position will provide visible support for the campus-wide scholarly communication program, which is built on the IUScholarWorks institutional repository along with open access journal publishing services delivered with the IU Office of Scholarly Publishing. The position will be part of a dynamic and collaborative Scholarly Communication department and will work closely with Library Technologies staff responsible for the development of the IUScholarWorks repository to include additional use-cases such as integrated initiatives in research workflows, publisher open access policies, and data persistence and preservation. The position will serve as the primary liaison for open publishing initiatives via the use of the Public Knowledge Project’s open publishing platforms Open Journal Systems and Open Conference Systems. The position will be part of a team to develop a full program that consists of training, outreach, liaison duties, policies, procedures, technologies, tools, and workflows for the dissemination of knowledge from IU faculty and researchers in all forms.

Reporting to the Head of the Scholarly Communication department, the librarian will serve as the liaison to the IU Office of Scholarly Publishing (OSP), working closely withOSP colleagues, chiefly including representatives of the IU Press, to shape the future of collaborative open access publishing services for the IU Bloomington campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working closely with colleagues in:

• the IU Press, especially the Marketing, Journals, and the Editing, Design and Production Division divisions as part of collaborative open access publishing initiatives instantiated by the IU Office of Scholarly Publishing;
• the IUB Libraries, especially in the Scholarly Communication, Library Technologies, Digital Collections Services departments and with subject librarians, and
• IU Libraries system-wide on shared initiatives such as services delivered via the IU Libraries/UITS Enterprise Scholarly Services team.

The Scholarly Communication Librarian is responsible for:

• maintaining the quality and relevance of ongoing open-access publishing services and initiatives;
• developing and implementing policies, procedures and initiatives that support these services throughout the Libraries as well as the Office of Scholarly Publishing;
• developing and implementing policies, procedures and services in support of the institutional repository focused on preserving and providing access to the research of Indiana University faculty and scholars
• providing education, outreach and advocacy for open access publishing and repository services;
• supervising the open access publishing manager (1 FTE) and student hourly workers and publishing interns, whom together with the Scholarly Communication team provide direct user support for open access initiatives
• contributing to the functional leadership for publishing and research dissemination services as a member of the Enterprise Scholarly Systems team;
• serving as Project co-director of the Open Folklore collaborative project between theIUB Libraries and the American Folklore Society and other selected initiatives that build or extend publishing services for the needs of IU researchers.

Basic Qualifications:

Required:

• ALA-accredited MLIS or MSIS or advanced degree in relevant field appropriate to management of scholarly communications
• One year [or more] of professional experience in an academic library environment
• Demonstrated experience managing projects, workflows, and systems
• Ability to work with others to advocate for scholarly communication programs and services
• Ability to provide support to faculty in assessing journals and other scholarly resources for quality metrics
• Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities
• Demonstrated understanding of the evolving scholarly communication environment and open access initiatives
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong commitment to serving research communities
• Must be able to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position

Preferred:

• Additional graduate degree in a related discipline
• Experience with institutional repository and open access publishing software such as DSpace, Open Journal Systems and Canvas Commons
• Experience working within an Agile software development environment
• Supervisory experience

The Scholarly Communication Librarian represents the Office of Scholarly Publishing and the IUB Libraries in appropriate national or international open access publishing and scholarly communication communities, and advises the Head, Scholarly Communication Department, Office of Scholarly Publishing director, and Library leadership on open access issues and opportunities.
