Duties & Responsibilities
The Center for International Development at Harvard University (CID) has an immediate opening for a full-time UI/UX and Visualization Designer with project management and client experience to participate in web-based projects at the Growth Lab. This is a unique opportunity to join a technical team designed to build platforms that share information and ideas to positively impact global prosperity and elevate people out of poverty. This person will work very closely with the research team and senior CID staff.

CID has consecutively been named one of the top five global think tanks in international development and is currently ranked #2 best university affiliated think tank in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s think tank initiative.

Our team consists of a strong group of interdisciplinary researchers and academics, alongside a small but growing number of technologists. You should be able to create strong designs as well as implement front-end experiences using HTML & CSS with Sass and similar modern technologies. You are expected to be a self-starter who is able to fulfill tasks without micromanagement, and you are encouraged to be involved in all parts of the ideation and development process. It’s an environment that places a premium on creativity.

The UI /UX and Visualization Designer will join a growing team working on the visualization of world trade data. A core project is The Atlas of Economic Complexity (http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/) and its subnational Atlases which aim to assist economists, investors, policymakers and the general public in understanding country and industry trade dynamics. The designer will have the creative lead for the development of our web presence and user interface on this and all projects.

Position responsibilities

  • Sketch, wireframe and prototype new features based on user interviews and surveys
  • Help integrate those new designs into the website and update them based on feedback and analytics we gather
  • Help create new visualizations for large amounts of data into websites
  • Fix frontend bugs as they are found

Work in an agile or scrum-like environment to design features that we can ship fast in small iterations.

The successful candidate will gain exposure to economic and sustainable development issues as well as extensive experience in a high-profile, fast-paced office, alongside friendly and energetic staff.

This is a benefits eligible term appointment for one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS or minimum 2 years of work and hands on web design experience
  • Experience with HTML/CSS
  • Experience working on data and visualization-heavy websites
  • Experience with Git and Git workflows (we use Github for everything: https://github.com/cid-harvard/)
  • Design skills and solid understanding of core and effective UX and UI principles, patterns and best practices
  • Experience with responsive design
  • Solid understanding of the design workflow from ideas to wireframes and prototypes to implementation
  • Demonstrated project and client management experience

Additional Qualifications

  • Javascript is a plus
  • Visualization (d3.js for us) skills
  • Demonstrated collaboration and organizational skills
  • Curiosity and awareness towards the developments within your field(s) of expertise
  • Experience or interest in working with javascript frameworks like Ember, Angular
  • Basic familiarity with Python is a plus
  • Product management experience is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal skills; ability to communicate day to day technical issues with non-programmers
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Any Spanish language ability, or interest in learning
