The Peabody Institute Library of Danvers is looking for a new Assistant Head of Circulation. The library is heavily used and well-supported by the Danvers community and requires an energetic and engaged person to help it achieve its goals.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Head of Circulation, the Assistant Head of Circulation works to maintain patron services at the main library Circulation desk. Duties include monitoring circulation transactions, maintaining the holds shelf, training new staff, collecting statistics, and enforcing library policy. Public desk service is a fundamental part of this position and the incumbent should expect to answer questions pertaining to circulation policy and procedure when not on desk.

Supervision Exercised

While not directly supervising, the Assistant Head of Circulation has authority over all circulation transactions. The Assistant Head may also oversee and direct pages and volunteers.

General Job Responsibilities

  • Performs circulation transactions to include checking materials in/out, placing and delivering patron holds, renewing loans, advising patrons as to the status of their account, registering new patrons, performing catalog searches, receiving/processing materials, and acting as reader’s advisor.
  • Assists in the training of new staff in circulation policy and procedure, including Evergreen ILS training.
  • Maintains the hold shelf and oversees library volunteers who phone patrons regarding holds.
  • Locates materials on the shelf for hold requests.
  • In the absence of the Head of Circulation, answers questions of library policy and procedure.
  • Collects and distributes library circulation statistics.
  • Oversees the Library Museum Pass and Tax Form programs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Broad knowledge of library practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to take an effective leadership role in circulation activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to exercise consistent, independent judgment in accordance with library policy and goals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with all members of staff.
  • Familiarity with information technology such as spreadsheets, Windows®-based applications, and integrated library systems.
  • The position requires one evening per week and some weekend shifts. This position is subject to a 90-day probationary period.

Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of library experience in a patron-facing circulation capacity. Previous experience overseeing staff or processes preferred. The position requires one evening per week and some weekend shifts.

Salary Range

$43,047 to $54,882 in seven steps
